One thing that buggles me, Muni Long’s R&B support. If she wins one of the categories, we’ll learn that she got a chunk of R&B votes but she’s against Beyonce and Mary J. Blige, two of the legends in this genre.

It’s her first time at the Grammys, how are you so sure she has more support than those mentioned?
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2023 at 8:03 pm #1205278950I mean, H.E.R. did it in her first year. She beat out The Carters, Toni Braxton and Lalah Hathaway, so it’s not impossible.

She seems to have a lot of industry support for her writing. She’s been penning hits for established artists for almost a decade. This could be her time to break out similar to H.E.R a few years ago

There’s no Silk Sonic and she can win Performance with no tie this time. Voters might look at it that way too! I’m not denying a Mary and Paak win either.

Hurt Me So GoodFebruary 2, 2023 at 7:09 am #1205280681I think the song and performance categories are between Beyonce and Muni Long. Jazmine Sullivan was in her biggest moment last year. I don’t think she has the same power with this song. Wouldn’t be surprised if she wins, but this is my impression now. Mary is taking Trad. Performance and Album. Steve is obviously winning Progressive Album.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 2, 2023 at 7:34 am #1205280704Hurt Me So Good has been dominant in R&B Radio since before nominations came out and it reached #1 during Final Round (I think). Charted fairly for 6 months. The support for Jazmine is still strong, she got into every category she submitted into. She submitted 2 songs into Trad R&B & that didn’t diminish her chances there.
Someone in here stated she could get the Lalah Hathaway treatment after finally breaking through with her first 2 wins.
Not only that, she’s still receiving and winning nods from “precursors”.
Hurt Me So Good also spent more weeks at #1 than PUYF did too.

Steve Lacy, Gemini RightsFebruary 4, 2023 at 2:14 pm #1205284103Would really love if Muni pulls off the impossible and take R&B performance. That was a great way to have a mainstream breakthrough with a traditional R&B song.
If I was a voter:
R&B Performance – Hrs & Hrs (Muni Long)
ReplyCopy URL
Traditional R&B Performance – Do 4 Love (Snoh Aalegra)
R&B Song – Cuff It (Beyoncé)
R&B Album – Watch The Sun (PJ Morton)
Progressive R&B Album – Red Balloon (Tank and the Bangas)February 5, 2023 at 2:13 pm #1205287562Mary J. Blige is not winning more Grammys than nor tying Beyoncé for total wins that night come February. Please. She’s being overestimated here. 3 wins in R&B is just not happening unless they give Beyoncé AOTY. Quote me on that.
I spilled, I fear.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 5, 2023 at 2:25 pm #1205287729I feel bad for Mary. 1st AOTY nod & she loses in her own field. R&B voters are unpredictable.
