Which rap songs released from October 1,2022 – March 2023 do you think is a contender so far the 2024 rap category nominees ?
ReplyMarch 11, 2023 at 2:27 pm #1205343133Not sure about individual songs but as of right now I think both Nas Kings Disease 3 and Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains stand a great chance for the Best Rap Album category

Agreed. I’m counting Dreamville’s new Creed OST being submitted to Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, but it could also be a contender if submitted to Best Rap Album. Cardi B, Travis Scott and Tyler, The Creator are some names that could possibly show up with new music during summer.
As of individual songs, Low (SZA), Munch (Feelin’ U) (Ice Spice) and Superheroes (Heroes & Villains) (Metro Boomin feat. Future & Chris Brown) are some contenders, IMO.
Also, I don’t know how to feel about Lil Uzi’s Just Wanna Rock. It’s such an odd song to be nominated for the Rap field…
ReplyCopy URLMarch 12, 2023 at 9:05 am #1205344255The rap field feels incredibly weak so far, I can’t even think of 5 potential nominees for each category.
Heroes & Villains by Metro Boomin seems like a safe lock for Rap Album, perhaps Creepin for Best Melodic Rap Performance too (but since The Weeknd is featured, I don’t know how that would work since he doesn’t submit his music anymore).
I could see Players by Coi Leray getting into Melodic Rap, it’s a fairly big hit.
I would’ve also said Her Loss by Drake & 21 Savage as a lock for album and Rich Flex in Song/Performance, but Drake seems to not submit his music to the Grammys anymore.
We potentially could get albums from Cardi B, Doja Cat, J. Cole, and Tyler The Creator by the end of the eligibility period, so that will hopefully shake things up.

Coi has so many better songs than Players… I really don’t like it, but sure, it should be in the conversation.
I have a theory that Her Loss could end up being submitted in favor of 21 Savage. If that really happens, I can even see it being nominated for Album of The Year (and all four rap categories).

Usually Drake withdraws his nominations from The Grammys because he doesn’t think they are fair so I’m wondering if he will withdraw his nominations again or if he will leave it alone since 21 Savage is also apart of it. I’m sure he already spoke to 21 about that.

Cardi B
Doja Cat
J Cole
Tyler the Creator
Nicki Minaj
Lil Uzi Vert
Pusha T
ASAP Rocky
Travis Scott
Are all expected to drop this year before the eligibility period.

players will probably get into melodic rap, it’s shaping up to be pretty big
doja is a toss up rn, i have no clue whether or not her sound will “qualify” as rap. hopefully her rap submissions don’t get moved somewhere else where she’s submitting, that could turn out pretty bad for her
i don’t see cardis second album being nearly as big or as acclaimed as iop, but i guess we’ll have to see

If it’s a rap album, it wouldn’t be moved. Like I said before on several other forums, The Grammys have this weird obsession with blocking and sabotaging only one female rapper which is Nicki. Hopefully she doesn’t submit to them this year. Everyone else will be treated fairly.

It definitely will be submitted by 21 Savage. It’s a collab album. He has rights to submit it even if Drake doesn’t want.

Its not so much about his “right” as it is will he stand in solidarity with Drake’s vow to no longer submit. 21 already has a Grammy so he could not really care. On the other hand he could indeed care we don’t know but i’m leaning towards they both decide not to submit.
In a perfect world Talib Kweli’s Liberation 2 would get a nomination as its his best individual work in YEARS and the rap album of the year so far but its only on Luminary which will kill its chances.

the Grammys don’t really treat Nicki unfairly though. she’s had steep competition in basically all her noms and she lost bna due to vote split

So, does that mean that the Grammys treated her unfairly, or she just had stiff competition? Two different things. The only category I think Nicki should have arguably won was Best New Artist, but Bon Iver was the critics choice that year and J Cole probably took a lot of much needed rap votes from Nicki that year.
