Congrats to Natalia, but the Academy’s hate for reggeaton is exhausting at this point 😕

Natalia Lafourcade AKA the Queen of Latin American Music

Finally got what she deserved years ago

The only bad thing about this is that it happened this year.

She should have been in Vegas receiving a standing ovation as she picked up Album of the Year.

She is our Violeta Parra, Mercedes Sosa, Consuelo Velasquez, Chabuca Granda and its about fkn time the world recognizes it.

    Thoughts and Impressions:

Aside from the winners, The Latin Grammys was a very well organized show that had the resemblance of a live show. It was incredible how Univision and The Latin Recording Academy pulled it off. By far, this has been the best produced awards show amid this pandemic and I hope that the Recording Academy takes notes and follows a similar path because this worked very well. I loved how they had the live reaction of the winners in which some of the nominees were there on Zoom or in person in which they seemed to be several individual stations distanced from each other. One of the reasons why I disliked the VMAs and the BBMAs was because it lacked those reactions and presence.

The performances were all great. There was not one that bored me at all. Though I have to say the performance that was hard to watch was Fito Paez and Nathy Paluso, not because it was bad (it was good) but because of the terrible technical difficulties towards the production of this performance. You could barely hear the guy sing. The camera movements were shaky and not well edited. Some of the best performances was the opener with Ivy Queen, Debi Nova’s performance with Raquel Sofia and Alex Cuba, Karol G and Bad Bunny.

    Now… The winners.

    1. Though I liked 90% of the winners, there was one that was really unpleasant and in my opinion, nearly ruined the show for me. Look, I really like Alejandro Sanz, He is an incredible musician who is influential within the music industry but how on earth did “Contigo” win Record Of The Year over Tusa, Rene, China, Vete, Rojo etc. ?!? Contigo is not the best Alejandro Sanz song and it is certainly not the best produced out of the 10. I’m sorry. What really upset me was seeing Karol G lose hope on screen while Alejandro Sanz didn’t even bother showing up through web cam. Karol did the most promotion out of any artist for the show, Did the most interviews out of all of the nominees, delivered an incredible performance, had the biggest latin song of 2020 and walked away with 0. Tusa and Rene were the BEST produced/written/mixed nominees out of all.

    2. Residente absolutely deserved it, and gave one of the best speeches in Latin Grammy history. I’d say Hasta La Raiz, La Tortura, Bailando, and Rene are one of the best songs that have won the Song Of The Year. It was definitely a moment that in my opinion saved the show from the disaster of winners that were announced.

    3. Natalia Lafourcade has been competing vigorously to win Album Of The Year this past decade. She absolutely deserved to win. Un Canto Para Mexico is a beautiful album.

    4. Bad Bunny, the guy was seriously robbed. 2020 has been one of the biggest years for reggeaton. And even though Bad Bunny won for Yo Pereo Sola, He also deserved to win Best Urban Music Album over Colores. I would’ve really like to see Bad Bunny accept at least one award during the live telecast because the guy carried the latin music industry behind his back this past year. YHLQMDLG was a world wide moment. If there was anyone from the reggaeton genre that deserved to win it was him.

Overall, even though the Grammys have a lot of issues of its own, so does the Latin Grammys and I hope we start to have an important conversation as to why Reggaeton deserves to be placed as high of a ranking as all of the other genres. Because this was a good year for the genre, all of the Reggaeton nominees were very well produced/ written songs that deserved to win in the GF this year.
