As much as I love the message, This Is America is NOT a great song. I’m sorry. I hate saying this as a Black person. But if I look at the previous winners of Song & Record, it fits. Most winners in those categories are not good. Adele, although a weak live singer, she was the only deserving winner of Song & Record this decade for me, and I am NOT a fan of hers.
Best New Artist has the biggest question mark for me. Really???
I know I should ignore that, but a weak live singer? She sounds the same live and in the record, many times even better live.February 11, 2019 at 3:10 pm #1202772580
Don’t see how that has anything to do with BNA…
And Dua Lipa fits the same quota Alessia Cara and Meghan Trainor did back when they won, and they were just as underwhelming as Dua. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up irrelevant like both of them.
I think she’ll be fine! those two you mentioned are local as fuck. Queen Lipa is ready to take on the world. She already has two Grammys. She just needs to work more on her stage presence. Her performance with St. Vincent was sexy as hell and she sounded great!February 11, 2019 at 3:12 pm #1202772583

lol love Adele but she skips notes live because she knows damn well she cant do the studio recordings justice. Its nothing to be shameful about Christina, Beyonce and many other starts do it.February 11, 2019 at 3:19 pm #1202772592

We’ll see. I think she is a lot more interesting than those two, but that’s where it ends. She’s only a slightly less annoying version of Camila Cabello.February 11, 2019 at 5:52 pm #1202772729
In terms of awards:
HER was robbed. If they were going to snub her there, at least pick someone more artistic. Dua Lipa is such a dull “pop star”. Zero personality, zero stage presence, generic music. She wasn’t even that big.
“This is America” winning SOTY. From a songwriting point of view, it may be the worst winner ever. “The Joke”, “Shallow”, “All The Stars”, “Boo’d Up” were all vastly superior.
I was low on Ariana Grande all year but she surprised me with the Pop Vocal Album win. I knew Camilla was winning nothing. She is a less successful Katy Perry.
Lady Gaga losing both GF awards surprised me. This tells me that while she has come a long way from her early days, she is still relatively polarizing.
Is Golden Hour the lowest selling AOTY winner? Silly me had it #1 all year even before nominations came out yet I changed it at the end to Black Panther.
Kendrick Lamar has had critical acclaim, commercial success with hits, and even safe soundtrack to a movie everyone loves and has lost every time. I’m not sure he ever will win to be honest.
In terms of the show:
I thought it was good. It wasn’t the mess everyone here thought it would be because their favs weren’t performing.
Janelle Monae, HER, Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin tributes,
Bad: Post Malone/RHCP, JLo, Diana Ross (she is 75 but still)
The opening was OK. They did what they could with the talent and star power they had.
They should cut one performance to give longer speeches. They shouldn’t be cutting ROTY/AOTY speeches. If they insist on cutting a speech, then cut Gaga’s lol.
I won’t be surprised if the ratings are decent. It was an enjoyable show. You don’t always need A-listers.February 11, 2019 at 5:59 pm #1202772734
Ok so I just had to make a completely different account because it wasn’t taking my username or password and saying t was a duplicate account! Did I get banned or what happened I’m very confused?February 11, 2019 at 6:29 pm #1202772769

Are you really gonna complain about cutting RoTY’s speech? What a speech! Given by a white swede who has nothing to do with police brutality in America. Come on. It was Donald’s vision and he wasn’t there.
The only surprise was cutting AoTY speech. Kacey probably didn’t deserve the win IMO, but her speech was nice.
Gaga’s speech was decent. I don’t know why people hate on her acting surprised and emotional. But maybe she really is? Maybe she doesn’t think she has everything on lock? I mean we all thought she was winning SoTY, look what happened… It’s the same girl who everyone told her she was winning AoTY back then, and the Oscar few years ago, only to lose them. So she probably learnt the lesson and doesn’t expect herself to win.

I thought the ceremony was too long, but mostly great. Alicia Keys is a delight. She should host every year. Really enjoyed the performances.
I was rooting for Janelle Monáe in AOTY (it’s a crime she hasn’t won), but Kacey Musgraves is incredibly deserving. One of the best winners of the decade IMO.
“This is America” is fine. Cool to see it make history. Decent choice for ROTY, though I would’ve gone with Kendrick. Gaga (or Brandi) should’ve won SOTY, but Gaga won more than expected anyway. Still shocked about “Joanne.” It’s a great time to be a Gaga stan!
THRILLED for Ariana. I’m old enough to remember when we were called delusional crack heads for even predicting a nomination for Sweetener. Later, fools! Too bad she wasn’t there. Would’ve been a gag to see her beat Taylor on TV.
H.E.R. should’ve won BNA, but she doesn’t need it. Excited to see what she does next.

I don’t think Kendrick is necessarily “done” because Black Panther was never winning AOTY in the first place and there was no huge consensus frontrunner so one can believe that Scorpion, Invasion of Privacy and Black Panther all took votes from each other. But this just tells me that a rapper isn’t winning the GF anytime soon, let alone AOTY. You still have those voters who feel like it’s not “real music”. The rap panel obviously respects Kendrick but the soundtrack was not undeniable.
Oh and Taylor being absolutely shafted these last two years speaks volumes. They won’t blind vote her like they have in the past. Unless she has a hit bigger than 1989, they won’t bow down to her like that anymore. Thank God.February 11, 2019 at 7:19 pm #1202772823
Honey, I still can’t believe Kacey Musgraves won AOTY for a fucking flop. These old white voter dudes get on my damn nerves.February 11, 2019 at 7:21 pm #1202772825
I guess I’m the only one who found Alicia annoying as a host.February 11, 2019 at 7:22 pm #1202772827
The only rappers who have won in the general field are ones who play instruments. Lauryn Hill, Big Boi and Andre 3000, and Childish Gambino all play instruments. Voters definitely favor the more musician type.February 11, 2019 at 7:27 pm #1202772830

They also had inoffensive music attached to their wins. Lauryn Hill was undeniable and she had a poetic album while Outkast had that mix of pop and R&B hits that voters were very comfortable awarding. And even with This is America having that kind of video, it was universally praised. It wasn’t controversial in a damaging way.February 11, 2019 at 7:58 pm #1202772844

Golden Hour was not a flop. Kacey Musgraves is not and never has been a hits artist, her sales don’t define her success. Same goes for Brandi Carlile, H.E.R., and Janelle Monáe. Kacey’s win was richly deserved.
