Which of these artists made the biggest impact in the 90’s, better music, etc. Discuss.November 13, 2014 at 7:58 pm #403964
MonicaNovember 13, 2014 at 10:28 pm #403965
Brandi made the bigger impact, but only if you count MoeshaNovember 14, 2014 at 4:14 am #403966
Aaliyah had greater impact. Maybe not at the time but certainly on music and image today (though Timbaland had a lot to do with that). Aaliyah and Brandy’s best singles tower over Monica’s, though the latter has the best voice.November 14, 2014 at 7:57 am #403967
This is tough becuase I feel like Monica has the better voice but the other two had a bigger impact but in different ways. Brandy had a tv show so I gotta go with her.November 14, 2014 at 8:12 am #403968
Brandy had the biggest impact in the 90’s.
Aaliyah had the biggest impact post 90’s despite her untimely passing.November 14, 2014 at 8:16 am #403969
Aaliyah had the most impact. Brandy makes the best music & has the best voice. Brandy’s commercial peak was bigger than any of the others, though.November 14, 2014 at 9:51 am #403970
Aaliyah wins this battle, mainly b/c of her untimely death. :-((November 14, 2014 at 11:25 am #403971
Aaliyah has made the biggest impact musically. She’s influenced everyone from Drake to Rihanna.November 14, 2014 at 2:40 pm #403972
The legendary Aaliyah. Her final, self-titled album is better than anything the other two have ever released. Thirteen years after her tragic demise, Aaliyah is the most relevant.
Brandy was the most popular during the 90’s.
Monica has the best voice of the three.November 14, 2014 at 2:54 pm #403973
Brandy was definitely the most popular (in the ’90s) and had the most unqiue voice out of the three.
Monica maintained a stronger level of urban support than Brandy throughout the ’00s, though.
Aaliyah is the most influential of the three. That’s not even up for discussion. From Drake to Ciara to Jhene Aiko to Tinashe to Banks to Rochelle Jordan to just about all the other alt-R&B/contemporary R&B acts of today. Her impact is still felt. It may have been due to her death, but that’s neither here nor there.
I can’t say that I don’t love any of these ladies. They’re my childhood years.November 14, 2014 at 5:03 pm #403974
Best voice & most popular – Brandy
Most hot 100 success – Monica
Best performer/ entertainer & most influential – Aaliyah
All three are great in their own way. But I’d argue that Brandy wins the 90’s three-way contest. Now if we go into the 2000’s, Aaliyah wins by a wide margin, as her self-titled album re-shaped r&b music.November 14, 2014 at 9:37 pm #403975

Well, i think Aaliyah was the one with the most critical support, and the one that was seen as the most talented. Brandy was the more commerical one, the one that was meant to appeal to the widest audience, and I think, likely had the least control over her music. She clearly was worked very hard and was promoted nearly non-stop. And Monica, I think had to settle for being the third tier one. She was talented and all, but she wasn’t the hip/cool one like Aaliyah and she never really developed the massive strong popularity that Brandy had.
so in their own way, I’d say they each had impact. But there was clearly a pecking order.
