The only competition to Beyonce is Sturgill Simpson.
Beyonce designed Lemonade to “impress critics” and appeal to everyone NARAS branch — r&b, pop, country, rock, alternative, urban. If that album fails to win, it will have failed its main purpose.
(Speaking of which, what the f is Purpose doing here?)

Absolutely nothing, as long as the artistry is genuine.

Beyonce won’t get big votes from rock, country, jazz and many others because afterall she’s big mainstream popular sexy diva with polarizing hiphop songs.
yes she got more acclaim and won some people, still long way to go.
she doesn’t even do campaign. she’s pretty much anti industry.
the nominations are packed with 4 ‘popular’ hit acts. 2 pop, 2 urban.
Sturgill Simpson will get full country votes and ‘underdog’ votes and hiss music is closest to rock. (listen to him, he’s not that country people think of)
adele is always safe choice for everyone. her music has universal AC sound.
so Adele or Sturgill Simpson will get it.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2016 at 6:56 am #1201962991Sturgill Simpson won’t win here. Justin Bieber and Drake are just here due to commercial success. The battle is between Adele and Beyoncé. NARAS has a bias towards urban acts in this category. However, Beyoncé is due for a win here at some point. Adele is the safe choice. She appeals to every voter. 25 wins by a hair.
SHOULD WIN: Beyoncé, Lemonade

lol, please
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2016 at 7:07 am #1201963007I am very happy for Beyonce, but also concerned. The fact that she couldn’t even score nods for R&B citations means voters might not be as hot for Lemonade as we think. Those should have been EASY nods (and wins) for her. How was that slighted?
She was the favorite to win last time and lost to Beck. I know Lemonade is more “diverse” with a variation of music, but voters are really biased here. I think Adele could still take it.
With that being said, if Beyonce loses AOTY this time, I don’t see her winning ever. I think there are many in the industry who are bitter or jealous towards her (maybe still some of the Destiny’s Child anger). Sorry for ranting, but come on! She should have a top Album win by now but she doesn’t- yet Taylor Swift has 2 already.
We’ll see…

I think back when she lost Urban Contemporary to GIRL. It just seems like the R&B field is trying to reward other people.

she got nominations in the rock category so what do you mean they want vote for her?
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2016 at 7:18 am #1201963024Beyoncé, but she is not a runaway here. I can see Drake siphoning some much needed “urban” votes from her. I don’t believe Justin Bieber will be too much of a problem for Adele when it comes to votes-splitting. I can see Adele and Beyoncé fighting for votes, though.
I just don’t see it for Sturgill Simpson. Country isn’t that powerful, since we haven’t seen a country winner that often, despite the so-called “strong” country bloc. I really think the general field will be a Beyoncé/Adele showdown, with Adele winning ROTY and SOTY but Beyoncé winning AOTY.

I’m thinking that Beyonce’s lack of R&B nods have more to do with that genre’s control group making a pointed effort to choose more underrepresented contenders as showcases. Not always, yes, since The Weeknd just won here, but it happens regularly enough for the nominees. I don’t feel like she’ll have a problem against “Views” in AOTY (more concerned about vote-siphoning in ROTY). It’s more about where all of those pop voters will go. Is there Adele fatigue out there? Short-Form Music Video should have been an easy get for “Hello.” It’s interesting that Beyonce’s most politically charged “divisive” album has been embraced the most genre-wise in pop, rap, R&B (UCA), and rock (wow; get it, bitch). It’s “25” vs. “Lemonade” to the death. The rest (Drake, Bieber WTF?, and Simpson) are window-dressing.
