i hope doja wins her deserving grammy in january tbh. someone can win a grammy by having sex with a voter/whatever they are but they can’t just discredit dr. luke? she’s stuck in a contract and she definitely doesn’t like him.
I’d be surprised if she manages to win anything at this point. The media seems very aware of the Dr Luke connection and feels the need to bring it up every time they write about Doja, after they mostly ignored it last year. While there’s at least one obvious alternative in every category she’s nominated in.
I do think people take the genre alignments a lil too literally. Some voters stick to the genres they mostly vote in when voting for the general field. However, many do not.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 9:55 am #1204660268Yeah, Love for Sale is definitely the frontrunner with the narrative, the field split, the pop/jazz voters, older voters from other categories, instrumentalists, etc.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 10:00 am #1204660286Well it’s kind of obvious that the top 4 are:
Billie, Olivia, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, Jon Batiste.
Maybe H.E.R or Taylor would battle for 5th.
The other contenders doesn’t scream “Album of the Year” winner. But stranger things have happened.

I don’t think most voters who are actively wanting to not award him will break down the categories like that. She is starting to understand that she needs to publicly distance herself from him by flat-out telling Rolling Stone that they haven’t worked with each other for years and that he’s credited for songs he had nothing to do with. It may be too late for that narrative to have any effect this year though.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 10:23 am #1204660366I’ve come to the conclusion that Doja will most likely go home emptyhanded, but I’m still rooting for her to win something because she deserves it!
ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 10:31 am #1204660400Honestly I’m just really happy for Doja and how great her career is going she truly became a superstar in 2021. Grammy or no Grammy the numbers don’t lie. The third biggest female album of the year (behind Adele and Olivia). That’s extremely impressive.

i’m sure voters don’t really look at song credits to begin with when it comes to performing categories, but that being said she’ll still to lose to kanye and gaga x tony. but it’s good that she’s trying to distance herself away from him cause that could definitely help her in the future
ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 10:40 am #1204660448Worth pointing out as there’s long been speculation here about which voting blocs are most dominant among Recording Academy membership:
Fascinating. Explains quite a bit, if accurate.

I agree that Doja’s best chances are BMRP and BPDGP. Hopefully she can sneak a win.
Can see and expecting her to get consistent nominations and definitely one in the R&B field.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 10:52 am #1204660489No contemporary R&B or hip-hop album has won album of the year since OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below 18 years ago. There’s a perception among some leading contemporary R&B and hip-hop artists that the Grammys will invite them to perform on the show, give them front-row seats and awards in genre categories, but will rarely give them awards in marquee categories.
Mason is aware of that perception, and the friction it has caused. “We take it very seriously,” he says. “First off, I sympathize with some of the issues that have been raised. But I do think it’s got to be correlated to our voting membership. As we start to learn more about the genres that are preferenced by our voting membership, we start to understand why some of the voting goes the way that it does. Which in turn has made us realize ‘Okay, we’ve got to make sure our voters are reflective of what’s happening in the industry and what type of music is being made.’
“That’s what has led us to our membership initiative, which is inviting different groups to join the Academy instead of doing what we’ve done in the past, which was sit back and wait for people to ask us to join. We can no longer afford to do that. We have to make sure we’re going into the different genres and inviting people – relevant music people – to come and join so we can make sure when it comes time to vote, and when there have been groups that have felt underrepresented or underserved, that we have the membership to support them and honor them with a reflective vote.”
Another GREAT article from Paul Grein btw!!
ReplyCopy URLDecember 16, 2021 at 12:06 pm #1204660678i wish successful acts didn’t submit their music and attend the show at all, just for ratings to flop. they will definitely put olivia, bts and doja on the headlines of their promotion videos just for tony bennett to win after, they don’t deserve them. but it makes me happy that locals don’t give a shit about the grammys anymore, they don’t even know who won the aoty last year, just the stan twitter/atrl niche is aware of that, ask someone on tiktok who won the aoty last year they will not know how to respond💀 the grammys have lost its prestige and the general public views sour as THE ALBUM OF 2021. i guess just taylor, adele and billie deserve to win based on success, i wonder why lol. olivia please attack crackers on your grammy speech!!
The GP doesn’t view any album as “AOTY” lol. The GP doesn’t give a shit like that and never has (if anything, the GP would choose Adele). BTS will definitely be used for ratings, but Olivia and Doja aren’t exactly household names. The narrative behind Gaga, who has proven in the past to be a ratings magnet, and Tony is more compelling than the newcomers, which is exactly why they will most likely sweep. Sometimes y’all need to understand that a song/artist going viral on TikTok doesn’t really mean much at the end of the day as that song/artist is forgotten the moment a new one comes along.
