I’m sure Taylor and Kanye being multiple AOTY winners/nominees helped their case.

Nobody from those two has more AOTY nominations than any mainstream acts in contention. Taylor has the alt/rock support. Kanye has the Rap Support.

If you look at the overwhelming amounts of Pop blended, cross-genre voters throughout the General Field evermore and DONDA are clearly next in line in AOTY.

Since when Taylor is a raiting magnet when it comes to award shows or in general? Her presence makes no difference.

Pop Voters make up around 17% of academy membership, which is fantastic when it comes to nominations, but not so great when it comes to wins. Hypothetically, this 17% would be split between SOUR, Happier Than Ever, Planet Her, Justice, MONTERO, Love For Sale, and evermore. In reality, the split won’t be even of course, but I’m not getting the feeling that one of these albums is so significantly ahead of the others in regards to support from pop voters. I have a feeling that the winners in the pop field will be decided by very close margins.

The last five pop albums that pulled off a win in Album of the Year were recorded by Adele, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish. 3/5 swept the General Field categories. folklore’s win was .. practically set up for it to happen. 1989 was absolutely massive, despite being up against critical juggernaut To Pimp A Butterfly.

I think that MONTERO, evermore, Justice, and Planet Her are non-competitive, the reward is the nomination.

SOUR: 3 of the biggest hits of the year, along with Traitor being promoted currently. Likely Best New Artist winner. Singer/songwriter type. Pretty much everywhere all year long. However, many voters may not take this record as seriously as something like WWAFA,WDWG? or Fearless, in comparison. They may feel it’s immature and skews towards “Gen Z” too much and choose to vote for a different album. Voters may decide to just reward her in Best New Artist and call it a day.

Happier Than Ever: Billie Eilish has won 7/10 of her nominations including BNA, Song, Album, and Record TWICE. She shouldn’t be underestimated. She has broad appeal to many genres, is respected by the industry on multiple levels (songwriting, producing, singing). However, this era was not ~as~ successful as her previous one, although she did have popular songs such as Therefore I Am and Happier Than Ever. Also, in her previous Album line up, she was competing against 2 pop albums (tu,n & NFR!), while this time around she is competing against 6, multiple who have cross genre and general field support (Justice, Planet Her, MONTERO) who may not win, but could certainly pull votes away from Billie, causing them all to lose.

Love For Sale: nominated in every category submitted to, including Engineered Album, Music Video, and Record of the Year. This should not come across lightly considering it is a cover album that many expected to just collect Album, BPDGP, & Trad. PVA nominations. It certainly overperformed and proved that it had wide support across the academy. Recorded by Lady Gaga (pop field darling, overdue for a general field win) and Tony Bennett (legendary singer who will be retiring), this will be voters’ last chance to reward Bennett, as well as possibly their best chance to reward Gaga in the general field. It may be almost impossible to pass up this opportunity. Some of the only cons I can think of are that it’s non-original content (yet it got a Record nomination), some voters may want to reward more modern forms of music and sound.

these are some of the reasons why I think there is a huge opportunity for an album like Batiste’s to take the win. And if not, I still think Love For Sale is the best chance for one of the pop albums to come out on top. Donda may rap support, but I’m sure he will lose some voters to Planet Her and MONTERO, not too many but some. H.E.R. is a grammy darling, but RnB voters may choose to rally behind Batiste instead.

right?! This year had Taylor, Harry, Billie, Megan, and Dua! All popular artists with huge followings yet the ceremony tanked harder than before. This correlation makes absolutely no sense.

Of course people wanna see Kanye vs. Taylor, but regardless of that, they still both would’ve gotten in.

Taylor has been releasing albums consecutively throughout different eligibility periods. Whereas this is Kanye’s first album in a while. Had Kanye released earlier they still would’ve been up against each other.

Acts like these are bound to be up against each other. Unless deliberately avoided.

Also, if evermore or Donda somehow manage to pull off a win, despite being added to the line up at the last minute, (yes, I know they were 9th and 10th but still) that would be so fucked up.

Gaga is due for GF love, and Love for Sale would definitely shake the girlies boots. I personally think it’s between Sour, Happier Than Ever, and Love For Sale, with the later winning.

i personally don’t think We Are is winning. I mean sure, he’s the most nominated artist of the night, but in reality, he could be another Jacob Collier. Also nominations don’t always translate to wins, just ask Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Lizzo, and Beyonce, who were the most nominated artist, but lost out while many predicted them YOU all predicted for wins in the GF categories.

You may have a point. There is a huge difference between Jon Batiste and those artists, though. He is considered a musician, hence his Americana and Jazz nominations. He doesn’t really fall in the “urban” umbrella either. His appeal might reach further.

I wonder if the committee would allow tony/gaga to get these many nods

Probably not. If committees were in place they would’ve reduced them to their Pop Nominations only. I can definitely see them blocking Tony & Gaga from AOTY, ROTY, & Best Music Video. Especially Music Video. They probably would’ve kept Best Engineered too.

With a committee the nominations would probably include:

    Lil Nas
    Batiste
    Kanye West (shenanigans)
    Billie
    Rodrigo
    Stapleton
    Bieber
    Arooj Aftab

    and let’s stop at 8.
