FACTS!! The glaring lack of grammys for artists like Lana and Nicki is criminal. Lana literally paved the way for artists like Billie and lorde and whatever is called “whisper pop” today. Nicki’s legacy is undeniable, there isn’t even a discourse needed on it.
I love every album Lana has made, especially NFR but it’s a crime that Born To Die was not nominated for AOTY. The album is still charting on Billboard 200 to this day and its impact is undeniable. I don’t even know why they don’t like her this much.

All the critically analysis of BTD at the time was that she an atheistic not an artist who believed her own unearned hype.
The SNL performance furthered this and made her a punching bag for years to come.

She was ruthlessly criticised in the beginning of her career by critics so the grammys snub was expected though v disappointing. It doesn’t matter tho, her artistry is like actually too grand for this rigged award show.
I know many ppl would disagree but NFR is literally the kind of album you get in once a decade, it deserved over Billie. Not to say Billie’s win was bad or entirely undeserving but imo NFR should’ve taken it. Albums like WWAFAWADG have been made before and will do so in the future too. The only thing it had over NFR was commercial success and I don’t buy people putting it on a pedestal because it was made by two teenagers in a bedroom, that shit doesn’t matter. You’re supposed to solely judge the album and the music alone. The grammys instead chose to award the hot new thing in favour of the artist who literally paved the way for albums like WWAFAWDWG… so weird.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2021 at 2:28 am #1203987661Lana deserved atleast a grammy. She deserves atleast 1 win much more than other 1 time winner like Justin Bieber, ariana grande and others.

n Best pop vocal álbum too

It’s baffling how she only got Best New Artist in 2011 then becomes the go out “indie” favourite for pop voters her next two eras but then is completely abandoned in the High As Hell era.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2021 at 7:37 am #1203987875I agree with the Lana Del Ray stuff – even though her latest comments have irked me…, and I am a huge Nicki Minaj fan, but I don’t see a time where she possibly could have won. Bon Iver was deserving and she was up against Kanye and Jay-Z in 2012. In 2015 Kendrick deserved the win, and in 2016 he swept the field. In 2019, when Queen was eligible, I can argue being nominated over Anderson.Paak in Rap Performance, but Rap Song and Album where so stacked she wouldn’t have gotten in. However, she did deserve to at least be nominated for in Rap/Sung in 2017 for Side to Side w/ Ariana. I know Nicki has beef with the recording academy but hopefully she will be nominated in 2022.

It had a trio of hits, If you had my Love, Waiting for Tonight, Lets Get Loud… and although the latter two were nominated I sorta expected her to get a female pop vocal performance nom for If you had my Love in 2000, and a Pop Album nod in 2001 for On the 6. Also, On the Floor deserved a rap/sung nom over Motivation.

There was still a sense of “oh here’s since Hollywood actor trying to make music, I have to laugh” dismissal around her during her debut era. The Dance Recording noms were still part of the pop field until 2005(ish) and it was essentially “you make pop music yt we don’t wanna give you any real noms” for the longest time.
If you had my Love in 2000, and a Pop Album nod in 2001 for On the 6.
By then the Mariah interview aired and I think the Grammys were actively conscious of not having another Jenny Vanilly situation on their hands.
Also, On the Floor deserved a rap/sung nom over Motivation.
Just because it’s got rapping and singing doesn’t mean it should be a Rap/Sung nominee. On the Floor is a straight up EDM-Latin pop and would’ve made an excellent nominee in either the pop or dance categories.

What song?
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2021 at 12:26 pm #1203988239I take that back I listened to Anderson.Paak’s song and it should have been nominated, however, winning in a tie? just give it to Kendrick

David Bowie. While nominated many times later in his career he was overall ignored by the Grammys. One of the most influential and important artists in the history of pop & alternative music over literal decades he deserved SO. MUCH. MORE.
When artists are decidedly different this seems to be what many times happens. Perhaps they flirt with the mainstream and draw academy attention (Let’s Dance) , otherwise: CRICKETS. It is only in retrospect that non fans see the slight for what it is. Embarassing and sad.

Then I looked it up and saw that R&B nor Pop had an album award till 1995! I was floored. Madonna, Whitney, and the like would have gotten nods. If there were album categories back then… Like a Prayer, True Blue and Like a Virgin would have gotten nods, as would have Whitney & Whitney Houston (The Album). Not to mention Mariah getting some well deserved awards for first 3 albums…
