PinkPantheress has multiple UK Charts entries, the biggest collaboration of 2023 and a “unique” sound. She is 100% a bigger contender than FLO & Coco Jones. Sure they’ve nominated at the BRITs and at the Soul Train Awards, but at so far, most of their hype is limited to online stan communities.
And while I don’t think any of the names in bold are going to win, imagine a scenario where PinkPantheress & Ice Spice are “hands down the frontrunners”.
PinkPantheress would be more likely to win than Ice Spice, in what would be yet another Xtina beats Britney, Megan beats Doja moment where the populist, “charismatic” choice in a “pairing” loses BNA to a peer that is more appealing to musicians in the industry.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 20, 2023 at 10:38 pm #1205358469PinkPantheress is very.. mediocre, from the music I’ve heard from her. If she and Ice Spice are the best there is to offer, I fully expect another Samara Joy situation.

i think lizzy would need to release another project, maybe a deluxe version of “five seconds flat”?
if that happens i think “ceilings” would also be eligible for soty, and since that category’s ballot is sorted by song titles, i think it can earn a nomination.

March 21, 2023 at 2:52 am #1205358540Raye is frontrunner I think. She’s in the industry for a time already and she’s so talented. This girl CAN sing and her debut album was critically acclaimed. Escapism is a very good song too. So far I see it being nominated across GF and in BPDGP. Some people compare her with Amy Winehouse.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 21, 2023 at 5:23 am #1205358567There’s bound to be a few surprises, but here’s what I’m thinking right now. I think Lizzy McAlpine is looking to break through this spring and will bump out some of the other pop girls that didn’t manage to (Sabrina, Gracie, Beabadoobee). Gracie or Beabadoobee could see a bump from the Taylor tour, but doubtful. I think if it’s the nominees below it’s an easy win for Raye, Ice Spice is not at Megan Thee Stallion level of mainstream name recognition. Raye will be working the scene for the next year and with her jazzier voice, she appeals to a broader audience.

zimmerman is DOWN there on the ballot, so is lainey, and country is general field poison, so i’m not sure if they’re getting in or not. i think it’s gonna be bizarrap and, honestly any of the other girls in the bottom part, taking those spots, although currently i would say gracie abrams.

FLO do have the backing of the likes of Missy Elliott and Darkchild. Don’t think they’ll win but there is no reason to think why they wouldn’t be nominated as the “cool UK act that US tastemakers love”, in the vein of Jorja Smith, Arlo Parks and Wet Leg.

It’s going to be a tough competition for that slot since we also have Pink Pantheress, RAYE & Bree Runway who could all be worthy of a nomination!

4. Doechii (over Ice Spice, I’m sorry but There’s nothing groundbreaking about her style of rap or performance)I’m still doing homework on others, but these 4 are prime, with RAYE being front runner. I really wanted Ethel Cain to break through last year, I love what she’s doing.
