As of right now, FLO will not be a thing at the Grammys. I’m confused why anyone would think they would be at this point.
They have not broken through in any way here in the U.S.
No hit single or album, no radio play, no streaming, no sales, no overwhelming critical acclaim. What am I missing?
After seeing last year’s nominations, do you honestly think any of those will be the determining factor? There are ten spots.

I think it is always a determining factor for higher profile, major label-backed acts trying to breakthrough in the Pop/R&B world. To me, predicting FLO is the equivalent of predicting people like Rita Ora, Troye Sivan, Conan Gray, Sabrina Carpenter, etc. The Grammys have proven that they really only go for a Pop/R&B act if they have established themselves with a hit or 2.
It becomes less of a factor for alternative artists or artists from other genres that don’t have Pop appeal, like Jazz or Americana.

I had FLO on my list but I haven’t been hearing much about them lately. If they can release another hit single within eligibility period then they might have a chance.
Ice over Pink and Coi.

Unlike last year, I think we have a clear winner in the Best New Artist category and that is Raye. She had an NPR performance. Ice Spice is shaping up to be the Latto or Saweetie rapper that gets nominated because she’s checking off the right boxes and collaborating with Nicki Minaj. It’s either her or Doechii. If Doechii releases a really good album with Kendrick Lamar in it, then I think she will take over Ice Spice’s spot. And I think Pinkpantheress will be nominated as well.

I’m rooting for Raye too, she would be a very worthy winner. She’s been in the industry for a long time too, and has written songs for many artists. Her debut album is a very strong project and I hope the Academy give her some love!
She had the NPR performance and is doing a ton of shows. She’s had her own headline shows, is supporting Kali Uchis on her US tour and SZA on her Europe tour, plus festival appearances.
ReplyCopy URLApril 16, 2023 at 9:36 am #1205392452I wish I was as confident in RAYE as y’all are but I just fear that she might be too unknown in the US. “Escapism.” missed the top 20 despite being stable in the 30s, and she hasn’t had a followup. I agree she deserves it 100% though.
