Sometimes I hate the BNA curse discussion. If you look back at some of those “cursed artists” some years, none of the nominees had great careers so it wouldn’t have mattered who won, we would be saying they were “cursed.”

True. Also, sometimes the best nominee just doesn’t end up having that much longevity. I think Lauryn Hill deserved her win in 1999 (the category was stacked though, at least in hindsight) but I think it’s fair to say her career went downhill shortly afterwards. Wins like that aren’t necessarily unwarranted.

I don’t think Lauryn’s career went downhill as she hasn’t released another album. She had mental and spiritual issues. Funny thing is, people are still anticipating something that is probably never coming out.

If she does release another album, I bet it is successful in some way. Just look at Maxwell and D’Angelo.

True, had she made consistent releases afterwards (not counting MTV Unplugged) the conversation would be different. Not releasing is different than flopping (for a lack of a better term).

Very interesting. Now I want one of these for every year!

Corrine Bailey Rae lost to Carrie Underwood. But she won Album of the Year as a featured artist in Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters.

Imogen Heap also lost to Carrie Underwood but won Album of the Year as featured artist in Taylor Swift’s 1989.
