In my opinion, cardigan needed a record of the year nomination to be competitive here.
It’s :
- Don’t Start Now
- everything I wanted
- Say So / cardigan
Dua has undeniable across the board pop support. Yes, Billie IS Billie, but many voters may decide to reward someone else after her historic sweep last year.
Those who point to ‘Joanne”s win, That win happened in a very weak year for pop solo performance. The closest competition was either Post Malone (who the Grammys clearly avoid rewarding) and Ariana Grande (who only had one other nomination). Gaga was riding the Shallow wave that year.
For a song to win this category, it usually needs both record/song nominations in the general field, or being a winner in one of them. see: Hello, Truth Hurts, Thinking Out Loud, Royals,
Interestingly, a song of the year nomination (or lone song of the year) seems to line up with the winners of this category more frequently, although it was before the expanded line-up, where most of them probably would have received record nominations along with their song nominations.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 1, 2020 at 3:33 am #1203886511Everything I Wanted is winning this. A Cardigan win could indicate Taylor is most likely winning Album of the Year.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 1, 2020 at 7:15 am #1203886727Don’t Start Now will win this and ROTY. It would be awful if any other song won, considering its stats and the fact that it’ll end up at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 YEC.
everything I wanted is great, but they’re not awarding her again this year after she swept so hard last year. She is winning for No Time To Die and that should be enough.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 1, 2020 at 7:17 am #1203886729I think Dua Lipa is taking this. Smash top 2 hits rule this category, and Don’t Start Now is unarguablt the biggest hit nominated.
Next in line would probably be Billie Eilish, since voters are still in love with her. That said, I think Don’t Start Now will carry more passion to win, and Everything I Wanted can split the alt/lowkey votes with Cardigan.

While I agree that Billie and Taylor will split votes amongst similar minded voters, I think the same for the other three songs (yummy doesn’t exist).
Don’t Start Now, Say So, and Watermelon Sugar were all massive hits and have the fun, upbeat vibe to them. I think they’ll split three ways with like minded voters. I think Dua will pull ahead since she is 3/3 in GF too and is sure to campaign but I wonder if the other songs will take too many votes away.

December 1, 2020 at 11:59 am #1203887549I also want to add that both Dua and Billie have songs rising on the radio as well. They might be on the voters minds because of this.
Harry has one too but it’s stalling out.

December 1, 2020 at 12:36 pm #1203887681“Cardigan” + 41 votes = Get real! (BARF!)
If you add your one too, then it will be 42. It’ll not be BARF! then 🤓🤓
ReplyCopy URLDecember 1, 2020 at 3:23 pm #1203887941I think Dua Lipa is the *clear* front-runner here. I think Taylor and Billie are the dark horses. Taylor could win simply because she’s popular with the academy right now, but the same could be said for Dua. Billie could win here as well but I don’t know if they’ll let her walk away with trophies for a second year in a row. I think Dua could pull a Truth Hurts and win this, then miss in the general field. Same could happen with Billie. However if Taylor wins this I think SOTY is guaranteed.

Taylor is no lower than #3. They aren’t handing a Grammy to Dr. Luke, Watermelon Sugar would’ve gotten into the general field if voters liked it. I think this is a race between Dua, Billie, and Taylor. The other 3 are non-starters. (Also I’m aware Dr Luke is not “nominated”) but I think him being on the credits taints her chances.
