The 2021 Grammy nominations were announced yesterday morning, and the nominees for Traditional R&B Performance perplex me.

In my opinion, Ledisi was a lock for both a nod and a win the moment “Anything For You” was released. I predicted Mykal and The Baylor Project as alternates, so I’m satisfied they are nominated. I see why Yebba made it in for “Distance.” (I mean, where else could she compete?) But I struggle to understand why the Academy chose her and Chloe x Halle (WTF? Their song isn’t remotely traditional.) over the much more deserving Kem and Toni Braxton for “Live Out Your Love,” Tamar Braxton for “Crazy Kind of Love,” Lalah Hathaway for “So Emotional,” and Charlie Wilson for “Forever Valentine.”

In conclusion, Ledisi will win. If she doesn’t, she’ll lose to Chloe x Halle, based on popularity and name check. This would be a huge and unjust loss and would confirm three things: 1) The Recording Academy doesn’t appreciate or value traditional R&B like they claim, 2) Ledisi is cursed with getting overlooked in favor of bigger songs and artists, and 3) Skewing younger, especially as it pertains to this category, doesn’t mean better.

What do y’all think? Let me know your thoughts below.

I think they made it easy for Chloe and Halle to win. The fact that they were nominated is atrocious. And Deborah Cox was snubbed, yet again.

I feel most confident in Ledisi finally winning. It would be unfair if she did not.

Though if an upset could happen, maybe Yebba could be the one to do it? She did win this category before in a tie for the duet she did with PJ Morton.

Honey, these nominees are awful.  Chloe x Halle are category fraud.  There is nothing traditional about “Wonder What She Thinks of Me.”  Guess Ledisi will win.  YUCK!

    SHOULD WIN: None
WILL WIN: Ledisi, “Anything For You” (BARF!)

Why people were saying that Ledisi submitted the PJ Morton duet when she’s nominated for the solo version?

It makes sense that she would submit the solo version which was the official single played by R&B radio.

I hope she wins but I feel Chloe & Halle will take this

They better not, and it is.

Deborah Cox was snubbed, yet again.

“Easy Way” and “Come Right Away” would’ve been R&B Performance contenders, not Traditional R&B. Besides, Deborah said on Unsung she quit recording R&B long ago because dance music made her the most money and kept her relevant. Her album, Work of Art, was announced in 2015 and almost six years later, we can only assume it was shelved. Her last successful R&B album was in 2002 and her last R&B album was in 2008. It’s been so long, I doubt people care to hear her voice again, though I would certainly welcome her return if and when she records an R&B album.

    1. Anything For You 2. Wonder What She Thinks of Me 3. Distance 4. Let Me Go 5. Sit On Down

I’d switch 2 and 3 since Yebba is a previous winner in the category and the single has received lots of fanfare and attention on Urban AC radio.

I agree. If Ledisi loses, I really hope it’s to Yebba or (and this is far-fetched) Mykal.

Those were people who just wanted to argue. They were in denial. Ledisi doesn’t need help earning Grammy nods on her own. She’s done it 13 times. PJ is hella overrated and he isn’t the Grammy darling everyone seems to think he is. Hell, half of his nods came from either writing an R&B song or being a member of Maroon 5.

Yebba could definitely pull off an upset. I have CxH in 2nd place based on their 2 other nominations. Traditional has sometimes skewed contemporary recently with Lizzo & Childish Gambino. So I wouldn’t be surprised.

If Ledisi loses, then she might as well never submit again. This should be an easy victory for her.

Chloe and Halle could ultimately upset here. Lizzo won this category last year

Ledisi is a Grammy veteran. I can see her win this but Chloe and Halle are really strong in this category. This is the only award I can see them winning in. R&B Song is probably going to go to Black Parade (A ROTY and SOTY Nom) and Progressive R&B is probably going to go to Chilombo (a AOTY Nom). Chloe and Halle could possible win this.

“Anything for You (The Duet)” was submitted by PJ Morton’s label.

Not sure what happened with the Duet version of AFY but whatever.

I think Ledisi can pull off a win, but I do agree Chloe x Halle have a lot of hype.
