SZA will win this. Nobody is talking about Gambino’s album or care. Redbone yes, the album as a whole? Forgettable.

There was definitely some spillover from the Emmys on Donald’s end. “Awaken, My Love!” was always a lock for a Grammy nomination, but the hype wasn’t even that big, even with “Redbone.”

Bar Free 6Black, his album is the least relevant album of the other contenders. The Weeknd has the biggest album in contention, and SZA and Khalid are currently high on the charts.

I’m hoping there is a SZA upset here in the same way Chance upset Drake in Rap Album and Kacey Musgraves upset Taylor in Country Album, and I think it’s a possibility, especially if the Grammys are feeling only “Redbone.”

AML has sold more than either Khalid or SZA’s albums, if that means anything.

This lineup suggests another Beyoncé/Pharrell will happen, where the buzzier, more critically acclaimed album loses to a less on-the-radar album with one big hit.

Oh honey, people care about Gambino/Glover. His Emmy love will spill over to a win in this category and Traditional.

It has not, though. I don’t think it has sold 200k yet, and even if it did outsell those, it couldn’t have been by much anyway. It’s certified Gold due to the massive streams of “Redbone.” In comparison, Ctrl has also been certified Gold, and American Teen is certified Platinum.

But I was speaking more of the album NOW in comparison to those others. It’s not really relevant now, aside from its Grammy nominations. SZA is the one that is topping critics lists right now with a song climbing the charts. Khalid has one of the most successful albums out right now. I really think Childish Gambino is riding his Emmy wave. In any other case, he would not be the frontrunner here.

SZA has a good voice, but Ctrl is lame and overrated af. Does SZA even sing about anything other than sex and pussy?

It’s sold 221k, which is just slightly less than SZA and Khalid’s albums combined. Khalid is at 121k, SZA at 105k.

And sometimes the one great hit is all you need. Pharrell beat Beyoncé just on the strength of Happy. I certainly think SZA has a good chance, and that Donald is not a lock, but I still think he’s the frontrunner.

And if we were talking about who would win this category based on overall success, it wouldn’t even be SZA or Khalid. It would be The Weeknd.

A lot of genre awards don’t entirely go with what is nominated in the general field. Sometimes, they beat what is nominated for GF. For instance both of Kelly’s Pop album wins beat Album of the Year nominees, Adele’s live song beat Carly Rae Jepsen and Kelly’s General field nominated songs, Bonnie Raitt beat album of the year winners Mumford and Sons in Americana album, The Black Keys beat album of the year winners Arcade fire for alternative album, and on and on and on. Sza’s got this.

Did you even listen to the album? Most parts, she’s not glorifying sex, she’s telling her life.
Plus, what’s the deal with sex? Sex is good, and sex is awesome.
No one bugs Bruno when he sings about sex, but SZA can’t?

CTRL was just named Best Album by TIME magazine. Do not underestimate SZA here.

CTRL was just named Best Album by TIME magazine. Do underestimate SZA here.

Solange’s album was called the best album of the year by Pitchfork the 2nd best album of the year by the TIME’s magazine and yet failed to get any album category nomination let alone winning one.

Childish Gambino is winning this. Ctrl doesn’t have any hit. The album itself is lame and boring.

Ctrl actually got the nomination, thus making her more of a threat for the win than Solange ever was (who ended up picking up R&B Performance as a consolation anyway), so I’m not understanding the comparison.

Ctrl >>>>>>>>>>>>> “Awaken, My Love!” Critics agree, and hopefully the voters will, too.

    SZA for the win!

It has two top 40 hits; more than Gambino’s album.
Love Galore which peaked at #32, and The Weekend, which peaked this weak at #37. Both of those songs are up for Grammy’s (Rap/Sung and R&B performance, respectively), and both are certified platinum.
SZA and Gambino have the same amount of noms, and being honest, Gambino got most of those because of his popularity as an actor and with the Emmy’s.

Don’t understimate SZA here, she could upset easily. As said before, genre categories don’t always go for the GF nominees.

Obviously, Gambino is the frontrunner, but understimating SZA would be dumb. She could easily take this as a consolation prize, since Gambino is for sure winning Trad. R&B Performance and probably ROTY or R&B song as well

If an upset were to happen in the R&B field, it will happen in this category.
