The fact that “that song” shares the same debut position as “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, all of Mariah Carey’s entries, etc. is an abomination.

Starting at #1 used to mean something. It showed that an artist had a huge impact and was highly anticipated.

There have always been chart manipulation. Even Mariah had been accused of it a few times.

But it seems that this level of chart manipulation is so transparent. Just look at the trajectory of those songs on the charts. It’s embarrassing.

Yeah, I remember Mariah doing some shady shit with Loverboy. They had to, they knew they were gonna flop with this project, I think it was very clear they manipulated that #1. Look it up.

Mariah had other songs that went #1 based on chart tricks, such as 49 cent discount, repressing her single release so airplay can build up big enough to go #1, etc. Mariah’s label schemes to get #1s are well-documented. “Loverboy” was an attempt that failed because Destiny’s Child pulled the same trick with a bigger song, “Bootylicious.” That’s not to take away from Mariah, though.

Really thought it did go #1 because of all the talk back then about the schemes and discounts.

And yeah, she must’ve done it many more times. For example, I can imagine “Dont Forget About Us” not being the most honest or real #1.

The whole debacle with Mariah during the time of Glitter and Loverboy was that Tommy Mottola tried to sabatoge the release of the single and was paying for radio to not play the single hence why virgin records decided to discount the single to 49 and 79 cents. Even when a single is discounted, people still have to physically go out and buy it for it to chart so I don’t know how that is chart manipulation if people are still paying for it in that manner… but whatever… “they can try, but they can’t take that away from me.” famously sung by Mimi… Legend with 19 number ones!
