Now that the BRITs 2023 have concluded, I thought it might be worth starting the thread for next year for those interested to discuss throughout the year!

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 12, 2023 at 9:11 am #1205300918It’s still very early days, and not many British acts have even released music so far!
Also, I’m not even sure how the BRITs eligibility works? I originally assumed it ran from January 1 to December 31, because Stormzy & Harry both got nominated back in 2020 for their respective albums that dropped in December 2019, however this year just gone, we saw the Elton John & Ed Sheeran ‘Merry Christmas’ song nominated, as well as ‘Peru’ by Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran, both of which were released in December 2021. So I’m assuming it now runs from December to December?
Here’s some early thoughts:

– Ed Sheeran has confirmed he’s dropping an album this year, so he’s more or less a lock for Artist, Album and Song of the Year.
– Lewis Capaldi’s album has been announced for a May release, so I would imagine he will also be a likely nominee in Artist, Album and Song.
– Dua Lipa is expected to drop her third studio album this year. I would expect her to also get multiple nominations.
– Little Simz’s ‘NO THANK YOU’ album would be a good AOTY contender.
– RAYE could be a contender, ‘Escapism.’ has been a big hit and even went #1. Despite being released back in October, I wouldn’t be surprised if they still nominated it. I’d love to see her debut album get some love too.
– PinkPantheress is a potential contender, at least for Best New Artist.
– International wise, I would say SZA seems like a good bet for Artist & Song. Miley Cyrus also seems likely, at least in Song. I wonder if Shania Twain could be a surprise nominee for Artist, since she scored a #1 album this last week in the UK?
– I am really hoping they FINALLY listen to the criticism they received this year, and create a Best R&B/Soul Act category. I really do hope this happens, and I’ll be truly disappointed if we see pop and R&B lumped together again next year.February 12, 2023 at 9:13 am #1205300921Rooting for FLO, Kelela, RAYE and Paramore in all categories.
Paramore seem like a good bet for an International Group nomination.

“You’ve Got the Love”, “Up”, “Hold Back the River”, “Touch” and “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” all charted in the Q4 prior to their calendar year of being nominated, with the former being the earliest to reach the top 40 in October 2009, before peaking in January/February 2010.

Since they got rid of the separate Male and Female categories which had 5 each, extending Artist of the Year to 10 nominees makes a lot of sense.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 12, 2023 at 11:57 am #1205301038The eligibility period confuses me as well. Or maybe they’re more lenient with songs. Bey will probably get nominated (and win) again if she drops Act II.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 13, 2023 at 11:18 am #1205302145They should just extend Artist to 6 nods and follow BAFTAs lead in terms of a quota of at least one male and one female nominee each year so there isn’t a category full of one gender.
Eligibilty to be the Best British Artist of the Year is to have released at least one top 40 album or two top 20 singles, released between 10 December 2021 and 9 December 2022.
Assume the starting date this year is 10 December 2022.

February 13, 2023 at 11:33 am #1205302172I think the Brits eligibility is just “whatever fits this year” tbh. They wanted Harry and Stormzy to attend in 2020 so they nominated them then. They had no urgency to nominate Little Simz or that Elton and Ed Christmas song so they kept their spots open for next year.

Arlo Parks – My Soft Machine

Jessie Ware’s last album got into AOTY, rooting for her again with this next one!
Little Simz definitely deserves a nomination in AOTY tbh. No Thank You was great.
Lewis seems like a safe bet for Album and Artist. Depending on the quality of the album, I wouldn’t be surprised at Gorillaz either.
Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa will inevitably be the main contenders if their albums drop this year though.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 18, 2023 at 12:59 pm #1205356483Ed Sheeran’s Subtract will definitely get into Album of the Year. From the sounds of things, it’ll be his most personal album yet, so I can totally see an narrative for his second BRIT Album of the Year win.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 18, 2023 at 2:37 pm #1205356520Rooting for my girl Jessie Ware. And yeah, Ed is getting every nom possible, Capaldi probably as well. Hope Mimi Webb can at least pull off a Pop Act nom. Also “Miracle” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding is shaping up to be a hit in the UK, so I guess it’s a safe bet for British Single.
