Is a calendar year a better eligibility period than whatever the hell they decide?

I voted yes. Logistically it would be a mess to make that happen. However, for the average viewer, nobody understands why songs that were huge a year and 4 months ago are being nominated or when the cut-off ends. Calendar years would make it a lot easier to keep track of.

Is there any reason why it isn’t a calendar year though?

I like the idea in principle, but I can see some drawbacks. There are always some people that have delays in their album release and they are rushing to beat the Grammy deadline.

But who wants to release in late December?

Not to mention it’s probably be going to be difficult to release at that time of the year when many music business people want to take a holiday.

But the real reason the awards show is held in January, or early February, is Television. The awards shows want money from TV channels and don’t want to compete with those sports series that run over the summer months.

I’ve always thought that an end November cut-off would work well. Not many significant albums get released in December and the critics year end lists will come out at around the same time.

December is better than what they have now, but in the end I voted no, because I think that an end November cut-off would a be a better option.

I think the Grammy period needs to be spread out to allow voters to gain perspective. It’s odd it ends at September, but I feel like having the award show at March or April would be better. And voting should be 2-3 months later. I feel like voters are voting on what’s out rather than the eligibility period as a whole (literally in 2019, there were 4 albums that came out in August)

The first president of Academy didn’t think it was fair to judge if something really is “the best xyz of the year” if it’s only a month old.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released in November. What was this person actually thinking?
