With Lizzo winning Pop Solo Performance, Say So getting nominated in BPSP and Lil Nas X taking BPDGP and now being a strong contender for Pop Solo Performance for his #1 smash hit song MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name), the question now is:
“Could’ve Nicki Minaj been nominated or possibly have/might’ve won a Grammy if she submitted/competed more in the Pop field?”
ReplyApril 9, 2021 at 7:17 pm #1204189117With acts like Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, etc.
What do ya’ll think of the future of Pop/Rap in the Pop field as well.

What’s interesting is that’s she’s only submitted her own (non-featured) music to Pop four times (Fly, TNISY, RIYT & Bed) and are most overtly pop songs (Super Bass & Starships) was only submitted to the General Field.
ReplyCopy URLApril 9, 2021 at 8:41 pm #1204189154I feel like with Nicki, it’s more that I think she had stiff competition:
-Bon Iver was one of the best BNA winners in my humble opinion. For Emma, Forever is one the best modern alt-folk albums ever.
-2010 & 2011 she lost to Jay-Z and Kanye West with better projects
-2015: she lost all her awards to Kendrick, which was well deserved
-2014 I wouldn’t mind her winning. It was better than Say Something IMO but I preferred fancy as the winner.

Mr. Morale & The Big SteppersApril 9, 2021 at 9:30 pm #1204189186Maybe as a featured act but not solo. The Roman album was snubbed in pop field.
ReplyCopy URLApril 10, 2021 at 12:21 am #1204189291Get real! “Bang Bang” (PUKE!) is NOT better than the gorgeous “Say Something.” Pure delusion.
ReplyCopy URLApril 10, 2021 at 12:24 am #1204189295Honey, Nicki Minaj should’ve won Best New Artist.
Let’s be real! Nicki is NOT ever winning a Grammy. She is past her peak. Unless, she does a collaboration with Cardi B (NOT happening), Megan Thee Stallion, or Anderson. Paak.

Well….
Although I do personally believe imo that some of Nicki’s songs could’ve/should’ve been submitted in BPSP.
Superbass and Starships (like mentioned) for example were only submitted in the general field.
Why?
ReplyCopy URLApril 10, 2021 at 5:37 am #1204189506Honey, sometimes record labels do NOT get it right. “Super Bass” and “Starships” should’ve been submitted to Best Pop Solo Performance too. Though, if nominated, they both would’ve lost to Adele. Nicki Minaj faced still competition between 2011-2016.
ReplyCopy URLApril 10, 2021 at 5:58 am #1204189515If Super Bass was released today it would have been nominated for Pop Solo given how they are embracing Rap/Pop hits more and more.
However, even if she had actually submitted it back in 2012 it still wouldn’t have gotten in, Pop Solo was highly competitive that year with a lot of abitual Pop nominees having massive hits. Also, that year Pop voters basically escaped everything that included rap, even E.T. was snubbed from Pop Duo despite Katy’s good track record at the time, and a song that didn’t even chart got in instead.
ReplyCopy URLApril 10, 2021 at 4:50 pm #1204190844Nicki’s timing is terrible – she always faced extremely fierce competiton. MBDTF AND TPAB?!
She was also ahead of her time. Her biggest hits were either ineligible for “Melodic Rap” at the time it was called “Rap/Sung Collaboration” or not Grammy friendly enough to sneak into Pop Solo.
In my books Nicki has an honorary Grammy for being one of the artists to help popularize solo rap/sung tracks.
PS: Ariana & Nicki missed the opportunity to get an easy Best Pop Duo/Group Performance nomination by submitting Side To Side one year too early.

Given how many black artists have started speaking up about their music being intentionally mis-categorized in Rap and “Urban” genres I think Lil Nas X COULD be amongst the first to have their projects nominated in something other than a Rap category. Hell Tyler himself complained about the same thing with Igor.
This is what we’ve been trying to discuss here!
But considering that Lil Nas X has literally won BPDGP, maybe he might have a better chance getting in Pop categories!

This unfortunately is also what I feel may have been the same problem Nicki might’ve encountered in her music!
