Looking back, the last 11 years, all winners have hits. Should we say it is a a rule, also when saying hits, i mean multiple hits. Not only one. What do you think on the matter ?
ReplyMarch 16, 2021 at 6:18 am #1204137736It shouldn’t be a require, but it’s a prerequisite to win.
pop music is defined as borrowing from other popular sounds to merge this transformer like song that merges what was popular at that the time. Thats why there Synthpop cuz they heavenly borrowed from new wave and progressive rock and disco of the time to create synthpop. Same Britney and Christina area r&b pop. Now it went from billie eilish/lizzo/lil Nas edgy bedroom trap pop to Dua lipa/the Weeknd/Harry styles retro pop.
so I mean these qualifications should not be a requirement, especially since the artisty-er project use pop a way to venture and do some crazy ass shit. I hope one day we can get a Charli XCX nom or Rina Sawayama because they build on pop music which each release from 2000s Dance Electropop for Charli and late 90s/2000s R&B pop / metal pop for SAWAYAMA. I just cannot fathom that they nominated that over Yummy, yet alone after hours.
in simpler terms, no. But I mean it’s already happening, even though there’s no room.

They all go for the biggest chart hits so yes, even tho it shouldn’t be this way, the pop voters only go for the chart hits.
They go for chart hits by basically all mainstream artists even in gf. Non hits mostly only win when they are by lesser known artists

but if you have a strong name + hits you are set most of the time
March 16, 2021 at 7:14 am #1204137875The pop categories as a whole are mainly based on chart dominance and overall presence in pop culture for voters. That’s partially why Harry submitted Watermelon Sugar to Pop Solo rather than Adore You like he did in the GF for example. It’s a different set of standards in comparison to the more baity songs/albums in the GF.

March 16, 2021 at 10:41 am #1204138451This is why I’ve argued with the rationale many on this forum use to dismiss albums like Melodrama/NFR in AOTY because they missed out on a BPVA nom. This goes for songs/records that appear in the GF and not BPS/D, as well, but the fact Pop has no panel to review noms is a sign the intention is to reward mainstream success in that category. Meanwhile, the BRP tries to make the GF a representation of the year’s best works.
An NFR/Melodrama could miss BPVA and still be competitive in AOTY for many reasons; voters could believe an album to be high-quality, but lacking hits or commercial success, but also, artists like LDR and Lorde whose work crosses / blurs genres will always be at a disadvantage.
We now have evidence from 2 consecutive years to show that there’s no correlation between Pop and the GF (‘Truth Hurts’ winning BPSP and Future Nostalgia winning BPVA), and on one hand, I agree that the GF and Pop category should be treated differently. Mainstream artists SHOULD have commercial success backing them up, since unlike other genres, they have the advantage of a large audience and exposure.
On the other hand, I feel the Grammys need to modernize its approach to the word ‘pop’ considering how many genres cross into mainstream / impact major pop releases. When R&B has a review panel and categories like ‘Progressive R&B Album’ and ‘Best R&B Song,’ it seems unfair that country-inspired work like Lady Gaga’s Joanne, alternative work like Lana’s NFR, R&B/hip-hop-inspired work like Ariana Grande’s TUN, etc., all compete on a straight vote for just 5 slots in BPVA.

I am strongly supportive of the Pop field getting a committee but I don’t wanna go back to the days of Adult Contemporary supremacy. Would we be able to see Charli XCXs & Carly Rae Jepsens in the Pop field? In thesis, yes. But the winners would end up being Lewis Capaldis & Calum Scotts every year.

i think it was just billie’s year. if anything, this year proved it was potentially closer between billie and ariana in this category than we thought, though billie was just undeniable
i also agree about the pop committee
