I have listened several times to all 39 entries this year and here are my top ten and my bottom ten! I am thinking a song I don’t like will win this year, the comments have been pretty depressing online. Loved Arcade, the winner from 2019, but hated the winners from 2018 and 2017 ): O.K., so here is my personal top ten:
1. Spain – Blas Canto, Voy a Quedarme. Must admit I prefer the English language version called “I’ll Stay”. This song was inspired by his grandmother’s death from covid last year. It’s emotional and a truly beautiful song – this is a SONG contest, not a dance contest, I wish the fans would realize this!
2. Belgium – Hooverphonic, The Wrong Place. This is the song I listen to the most, an irresistible hook to it, and I just love this group!
3. Austria = Vincent Bueno, Amen. Heartfelt and emotional, another song inspired by the death of loved ones, including his daughter.
4. Switzerland – Gjon’s Tears, Tout l’Univers. I have loved Gjon’s Tears since he was on the French version of The Voice, esp. his version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Another emotional song!
5. Estonia = Uku Suviste, THe Lucky One. A strong vocal performance and a charismatic performer!
6. Ireland – Lesley Roy, Maps. A fantastic vocal performance lifts this song up high for me.
7. France – Barbara Parvi, Voila. At first I wasn’t sure I liked it but the more I listened to it the more I appreciate it!
8. Sweden- Tusse, Voices. A catchy song, but it isn’t consequential enough for me to be a winner.
9. Germany – I Don’t Feel Hate. Can’t remember his name? Catchy and fun but inconsequential.
10. Slovenia – Amen. A strong performance but the song isn’t as strong as the performance for me.
I truly disliked at least 15 of the songs this year, including several that are touted as top ten and maybe even the winner ): There were about 10 that were good solid songs but not all that great for me. It will be interesting to see how it all goes this year! Some years there are great winners and some years truly awful ones – which will it be this year???

May 14, 2021 at 9:54 am #1204254943Eurovision often goes to the wrong winner so I just enjoy rooting for all the songs I enjoy and know that the uptempo dance numbers that are well staged can sometimes win when they aren’t particularly good songs. I just find it fun and it introduces me to new international artists each and every year!

Yes, “Arcade” deserved to win – but that’s rare. Terrible winners in 2018, 2017 and particularly 2006, and the wrong winner by far in 2005, when “Angel” got robbed of the win!

The song I listen to the most is “The Wrong Place”, which has an irresistible hook! But “Voy a Quedarme” is my pick for the best SONG of Eurovision this year!

Belgium, The Wrong Place
Sweden, Voices
Malta, Je ma casse

Aberzajain, Mata Hari
Russia, Russian Woman
Norway, Fallen Angel
Lithuania, Discoteque
Ukraine, ShumThe first five were in my top ten; the bottom five were in my bottom 6! At least Belgium made it to the final!
Biggest disappointment: Ireland, my #2 for this semi-final, didn’t make it ): Again, my problem with Eurovision is that it is supposed to be a SONG contest, yet it often feels like a dance contest, where the staging matters more than the song ):
I am sure they will wound me with terrible choices in semifinal 2, which will be held tomorrow night (Thursday)!
