Inspired by filmshaveflavor’s polls of the best Song Of The Year winners at the Grammys from the 1970s to the 2010s, I thought it’d only fair to do similar polls for each decade with Record Of The Year, starting with the 1970s. My favorite is “It’s Too Late.” How about yours?

a pretty average set of winners considering how spectacular the album winners were this decade. bridge over troubled water is without a doubt the best song here, but it’s a perfect piece of songwriting that’s never gotten the perfect recording it deserves, so I’ll go with hotel california on this one

“Hotel California”. It’s one of my 20 or so favourite songs of all time.”Bridge over Troubled Water” is a close runner-up. The worst is the disgustingly sappy “Love Will Keep Us Together”.

The 1970’s were an amazing decade with Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Donna Summer, Blondie, the UK punk revolution and Eric Clapton might have been at his peak.

    From these options,
Roberta Flack — “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”

    1. “It’s Too Late”- Carole King
    2. “Hotel California”- The Eagles
    3. “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”- Roberta Flack
    4. “Killing Me Softly with His Song”- Roberta Flack
    5. “Bridge Over Troubled Water”- Simon & Garfunkel
    6. “What a Fool Believes”- Doobie Brothers
    7. “Masquerade”- George Benson
    8. “Love Will Keep Us Together”- Captain & Tenille
    9. “I Honestly Love You”- Olivia Newton-John
    10. “Just the Way You Are”- Billy Joel

The top 5 are great winners. I could have easily voted for any of the top 4 if the other 3 had lost their respective years. The bottom 3 should not have been nominated let alone win (even though I love Olivia Newton-John.)

“You’re So Vain” is the greatest nominee of the decade whether win or loose.

Some great nominees this decade for me are: “(They Long To Be) Close To You”, “Fire and Rain”, “Let It Be”, all of the 1971 nominees, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”, “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”, “Help Me”, “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover”, “Blue Bayou”, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”, “Evergreen”, “Stayin’ Alive”, “The Gambler” & “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”.
