Folklore for me, but Evermore is also great.

ugh. I honestly can’t decide. Both albums are incredible. 😭 However, evermore is much more raw, the production on these songs are career best, vocally this is her best album, it’s more experimental than folklore.

evermore felt more consistently good but folklore had higher highs. so i’m not sure
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2020 at 2:13 pm #1203948225I put evermore. Could just be recency bias.

I agree with this. There isn’t a mirrorball or epiphany or hoax on evermore but there also isn’t an august or a betty.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2020 at 3:27 pm #1203948380Folklore has fewer skips for me so I’d go with that, but both are superb
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2020 at 3:30 pm #1203948388Folklore is better, but Evermore is just as good.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2020 at 3:37 pm #1203948396Folklore had more songs I like. Willow is probably the best song out of the two albums though
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2020 at 3:45 pm #1203948402There are no skips on folklore, all songs go from “very good” (the 1, invisible string, epiphany) to excellent (exile, cardigan, my tears ricochet, hoax) to great (TIMT, august, mirrorball, seven). All the ones i didnt mentioned are also excellent.
While evermore has highs as great as folklore (tolerate it, evermore) it also has lows (“ok” songs like gold rush or dorothea), and more songs that are just very good as opposed to excellent or great.
December 27, 2020 at 4:00 pm #1203948417Folklore is more “baity” and accessible for critics. It’s the “better pick” in terms of Grammys and other award shows. It’s a lot more cohesive and “put together”. Everything just flows.
Evermore, to me at least, is something she made primarily for her fans. It’s definitely not as cohesive, more upbeat, radio friendly, and “raw”.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 27, 2020 at 5:01 pm #1203948498I think Folklore takes the cake here. It has songs that are just TOO incredible to top like mirrorball, august, and seven, especially when you factor in that killer stretch from exile to illicit affairs.
Evermore has songs that are pretty much just as good, like champagne problems, tolerate it, gold rush, and evermore, but they seem to be spaced out between just “good” songs, like coney island, dorothea, willow, etc.
To me, Evermore is more accessible and musically diverse, while Folklore reveals itself more with every listen in its lyrical complexity and superb tracklisting.
