The lack of Adele in the ballots is definitely noticeable. But secret ballots are so unreliable and out of pocket sometimes that it might not mean a thing. Variety is the kind of publication that would put out clickbait pieces to spur discussion so they might have left the ones that voted for Adele or were too simplistic. Will just have to see.
No one mentioned Silk Sonic on last year’s ballots and look what happened.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 4, 2023 at 11:33 am #1205283904I do believe some artists and songs benefit from being high up on the ballots. There are hundreds and thousands of entries and I don’t think people really prioritize the Grammys in real life.
Some voters probably voted 2 or 3 of their faves and then fill the other choices que the first thing they see.
That’s only thing that can explain Backstreet Boys nomination in 2018. And the random Beck nomination in Pop solo over pop favorites like Taylor Swift.

Pop Duo Group lineup in 2018 should forever be the biggest example of alphabetical advantage.

That doesn’t mean it’s the sole factor in determining nominees nor that voters don’t vote for what they like. But obviously when you have few days to cast your ballots from gigantic lists you might have some priorities but the rest end up filled with names you recognize or have sympathy quickly, which should be at the top of such lists.February 4, 2023 at 11:40 am #1205283913Honey, voters could’ve liked and intentionally voted for ABBA, “abcdefu,” Backstreet Boys, and Beck.
No one said they didn’t like, but that those artists had the advantage of being spotted before in the listing than those at the end of it.

true, watch us get golden hour by jvke in soty next year
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 4, 2023 at 12:49 pm #1205284006Nice seeing the Steve Lacy love. Other that that, this reveals nothing until the envelopes are opened. The Variety ballots were meh, and that 70-year-old’s comments were snobbish trash.

and made Stevie Lacey and Kate Bush overnight sensations. Your point ?
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 4, 2023 at 1:03 pm #1205284027I think the Grammys need to reevaluate their voting process and the committee. The award show has become about who can rub elbows and bow down in order to win one. The spiteful behavior is showing more and more each year.

my comment had no intention on shading Steve Lacy or other artists who do bring good music to the conversation thanks to TikTok.
Tiktok is a double-edged sword in this scenario. It could give us worthy nominees such as Bad Habit, as well as the most undeserving ones like abcdefu (which very likely benefited from the alphabet advantage).
no need to get upset lol.
February 4, 2023 at 1:55 pm #1205284073I would support anything to get Beyonce to finally win AOTY. I’m glad some people are voting wisely

February 5, 2023 at 1:17 am #1205284635ABBA deserves the nominations as much as any other artist nominated. It’s musical ignorance and undeserved arrogance to suggest otherwise. I’ve listened to the nominations and my vote would go ABBA for pop duo/group hands down not because they’re due but because it is the standout in that group of nominees.
