    So, Gaslighter is phenomenal.

I saw that it was available in my Amazon Prime app for streaming this morning and I’m on my second listen. Excellent record from The Chicks!

    Best tracks on “Gaslighter”:

    1. Gaslighter
    2. Sleep at Night
    3. Everybody Loves You (not written by any members of the band)
    4. Julianna Calm Down
    5. Young Man
    6. Hope It’s Something Good
    7. Set Me Free

”Set Me Free” is the best country album closer since “Rainbows” by Kacey Musgraves.

Gaslighter caught me by surprise. It’s a heartbreakingly honest album which seems to walk the line between resentment and acceptance marvelously.

The opening title-track feels like such a potent kiss-off to Natalie’s ex-husband. I love Jack’s production work as well. It gives it space and feels like a song you want to play and shout along the lyrics. The following two tracks kinda felt a little too generic (though good). Sleep At Night feels like a Taylor Swift deep-cut, and Texas Man, while fun, isn’t anything groundbreaking.

The album really picks up at track 4. I know Everybody Loves You is a cover, but the intimacy of the song and the raw vocal performance feels like a moment of real melancholy. For Her follows up with another beautiful performance, though the production definitely feels a little Swift-like at moments.

March March is a song I wish I liked more. The verses are potent and sharp, and have some of the best lyrics of the album. However, I feel like they don’t quite resolve to anything. The main line (March march to my own drum) feels like a weak payoff to such strong verses. That said, love the instrumental outro (the banjo and violin are on-point this whole album as expected).

I think My Best Friend’s Wedding starts a streak of emotionally potent songs that continues til the last track. Contrary to the previous track, the resolution at the third verse hits home. It feels like the first moment of the acknowledgement that things have come to a solid end. Tights On My Boat continues that thought but shows the more petty, angry side of things, but in a way that feels justified. Hearing the lyrics almost feels cathartic.

Julianna Calm Down and Young Man also feel like two song, much like the previous two songs, which show some sort of dichotomy or yuxtaposition. In the former, it feels like more of a empowerment anthem for their daughters. It almost feels like a projecting to them what their moms have experienced. Inversely, Young Man (my favorite song on the album) shows the most maturity in the entire project, realizing that, no matter what they’ve been through, it is ultimately their son’s own right to chose how he sees each of them. The line that struck the harder was “My blues aren’t your blues; it’s up to you”. Acknowledging her son’s choice in deciding what his perception of his father will be is a heartbreakingly mature and self-less decision.

The last two tracks close the album beautifully. I especially love Set Me Free, mainly because of how it doesn’t really end the story, but rather gives a last look on it. Because, much like a real divorce, there’s really not a concrete end; it’s a process that will take much more than a simple goodbye.

This album reminded me of Kacey Musgrave’s Golden Hour, mostly because, just like with Kacey’s album, I was expecting to find this project underwhelming (based on what I’d heard of the Chicks prior) and ended up not wanting the album to end; in some ways, the albums kind of feels ike an antithesis to Golden Hour, almost like the continuation and demise of that ideal relationship. To me Gaslighter feels like the Golden Hour of the year: a vulnerable look into the singer’s diary, highs and lows included.

What are your favorite album releases? Like, albums that came out of nowhere and essentially changed something about the music game.

In Rainbows release tactic was… that.

Also, Beyoncé was also a pleasant surprise seeing not only an album but full-fledged music videos for each song.

Crazy how Fantasy didn’t even win. I wonder why the Panel Snubbed her a crossed the board. To be fair she did have stiff competition.
