I’m about to start work on the 2nd Annual Gold Derby Music Awards nominations voting round. I’ve actually been working on this for a while. It’s why there are soooooo many candidates available to predict for Grammys: I would’ve needed to add those candidates anyway to expand the GDMAs. But I wanted to let you guys know a few things in advance and also open the floor to opinions and suggestions. I won’t be able to make everyone happy; eventually I’ll have to just make some unilateral decisions in order to get these off the ground since they’re a lot of work. But I want to hear people’s thoughts.

What definitely is happening is that I’ll be adding genre awards: last year it was just Pop Artist, Country Artist, etc. This time I’ll also have album and song awards for each genre (song awards will jointly honor the performing artist and the songwriters). I’m not sure about Latin yet. I would need to add so many more candidates for albums and songs that it might be prohibitively difficult. In that case, I would probably keep Latin Artist and include some of the most prominent albums and songs in their other corresponding genre categories (like Bad Bunny’s recordings going in hip-hop).

Other things I’m considering include category placements. Grammys make surprising category decisions sometimes, so I could either follow their lead (for instance by putting Kacey Musgraves’s “Star-Crossed” in the Pop Album category), or put her in both pop and country and let our voters decide. If I do the latter and someone gets enough votes to be nominated in two different genre categories, they will only get the nomination in the category where they got more votes, like how the Oscars determine lead/supporting. That would be different from last year when I allowed The Weeknd to be nominated in both pop and R&B artist categories (which was like the AMAs).

And while this wasn’t too big a problem last year, to guard against any fandoms running wild, I’m going to follow the Grammys’ lead by only allowing one nomination per artist in each category, except for where there’s a different combo of artists credited. For instance, Lil Nas X could be nominated for both “Call Me by Your Name” and “Industry Baby” since the latter features Jack Harlow, but Megan Thee Stallion couldn’t be nominated for both “Body” and “Thot Shit.”

As you can see, I’m putting a lot of thought into these. I don’t want to overload these awards with rules and regs, though, since I want them to be as clear and user friendly as possible for everyone who participates.

I think everything makes sense. Also really agree with genre placements; last year it seemed a bit weird that some artists were able to be in multiple genres.

So far it looks like 23 categories (or 22 if I decide to cut Latin Artists and include those musicians into their other associated genres like pop, rock, or hip-hop):

    GENERAL
    Artist of the Year
    Album of the Year
    Record of the Year
    Song of the Year
    Best New Artist

    Best Music Video
    Best Collaboration

    GENRE
    Country/Americana Artist
    Country/Americana Album
    Country/Americana Song

    Latin Artist

    Pop Artist
    Pop Album
    Pop Song

    R&B/Soul Artist
    R&B/Soul Album
    R&B/Soul Song

    Rap/Hip-Hop Artist
    Rap/Hip-Hop Album
    Rap/Hip-Hop Song

    Rock/Alternative Artist
    Rock/Alternative Album
    Rock/Alternative Song

I would also include best cover, since the song categories award the songwriters and performers and they are not newly written

I think it’s important to have Best Latin Artist, even if you can’t have song or album awards. Most Latin artists won’t have a chance with the mainstream English speakers.

Nice. Let’s take a page out of NARAS book and limit the voting to 3 Genres per member 🙂 because the Rap and R&B categories will be a mess.

Good point! I think a better solution is to nominate just the recording artist and not the songwriters in cases where a cover is nominated.

No EDM category, any EDM contenders I’ll probably categorize as pop

I think that letting the voters decide category placement by where the candidate gets the most votes is a great option !

I believe that Latin music is sufficiently differentiated to occupy its own space. If variety is what concerns you, I would recommend concentrating on the mainstream (urban music and Latin pop)

I also think that Dance music should not be snubbed and at least deserves a category (it can be any: Album, Artist or Song)
