Once again, let me say, this is such a poor year for music compared to last year.

The music last year was really the only good part.

No. Last year didn’t have Blue Weekend, …Introvert, Nurture, Daddy’s Home and Heaux Tales. Maybe for pop since last year we had Charli x Sawayama x Haim x double TS, but other than that, this year outsold.

Daddy’s Home? Blue Weekend? You really think those albums are on the level of Fetch The Bolt Cutters, What’s Your Pleasure?, Saint Cloud, Punisher, Women In Music Part 3, Songs (Adrianne Lecker), Folklore/Evermore? I’ve even grown to appreciate Sawayama, Future Nostalgia, Chromatica more. And those are just a handful of albums from female artists last year. Daddy’s Home and Blue Weekend don’t even stand out in the catalogs of those two artists. Barely anyone would have paid much attention to them if they were released last year.

We don’t even talk outside of pop realm which last year very much lacked of. I do prefer listening to albums from last year, especially those you just said and How I’m Feeling Now (a quintessential quarantine album), but I’m not covering myself from the reality that we have better year in terms of quality this year, or at least this year is not a poor one.

Can we also make another thread for songs in general (not the hits only), or is there already one? I think it is easier for me to list songs because I am obviously behind so many of great stuffs released this year.

2021 was maybe a slightly better year for hip-hop and R&B. But even that’s debatable. Only a few albums last year I thought were great and only one I thought was a masterpiece/almost masterpiece (FTBC). But in terms of depth of quality and variety of quality, it was probably the strongest year of music since 2012 or 2015. I didn’t even wanna bother with doing a top ten for this year. And there wasn’t a single album I heard this year I would refer to as “great”.
