Hey all,
So as I’ve been doing the Golderby’s top 20 songs contest, I’ve been thinking about how preferential voting would affect the Grammy’s.So maybe this could be a good experiment. All of the data will be made public so that we can take a look at the differences between the two systems. The primary method here is preferential, but i’ll be posting parallel winners based on the grammy’s current method to see where a split exists.
This is not about predictions. Vote as if you were a voter, based on who you think deserve the Grammy’s. The aim is to study in which type of categories preferential voting can make a difference, to see maybe if there’s any instances of picks that got enough #2nd and #3rd picks to win despite not having enough #1s etc..
I’m hoping that enough people vote in the GF categories to make any result substantial enough. Here are the lists below (I suggest right clicking and opening in a new tab):
REMEMBER TO RANK YOUR PICKS!
Record of the Year
Album of the Year
Song of the Year
Best New Artist
Best Pop Solo Performance
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
Best Pop Vocal Album
Best Progressive R&B Album
Best Rap Performance
Best Melodic Rap Performance
Best Rap Song
Best Rap Album
Best Music VideoThank you in advance!

Country, Rock, Alternative and American Roots preferably?

I can add some categories tomorrow. But some categories have few votes.
Best Pop Duo/GP has the most votes at the moment, 19 so far. Record of the Year second. But some of the other categories haven’t generated much interest. But I’ll try to add them.

What do you mean “No one has time”.. It won’t take the voters much longer than the current system. And I think ideally we’ll need it at least in the GF. Also that 500 number is for the first round, this system is regarding the second round. And regardless of the turnout, it can still make a difference.

But even if we focus on final round voting, there are still problems with this idea. Preferential voting can have advantages in political elections, for example the Far Right party or the Communists might have a popular candidate, but not many people outside those parties support base will be willing to give their second preference to those extreme candidates.
The successful candidate will need some mainstream appeal – preferential voting tends to filter out the extremists and arguably promotes political stability.
But ask yourself who are the ‘extremists’ in Music and the answer is pretty clear, the extremist genres are Rap, Punk and any other genre or artist that might be considered controversial (e.g. David Bowie back in the 80s). Expect more wins for Adele, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and other safe artists.
But music awards need more ‘extremist’ wins and upsets.

The 500 estimate was for FIRST ROUND VOTING, which is prpbably low because no voter wants to fish 8 nominees among a thousand submissions.

I tried voting in the Pop categories and it didn’t allow me submit my vote. Is there a limit or something?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 1, 2021 at 5:19 am #1204073047Also, come submissions for 2022 Grammys era, can you make something like this again to sort of predict the nominees?

Worked now.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 1, 2021 at 11:55 am #1204074589I don’t know how to edit the OP without deleting the entire thread (I hate this bug), but I’ll post the newly added categories here since there seems to be a lot of interest, many categories have gotten 40+ votes so far:
Best Rock Performance
Best Metal Performance
Best Rock Song
Best Rock Album
Best Alternative Music Album
Best R&B Performance
Best Traditional R&B Performance
Best R&B Song
Best R&B Album
Best Country Solo Performance
Best Country Duo/Group Performance
Best Country Song
Best Country Album
Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media
Best Song Written For Visual MediaThis is not a highly competitive year so we cant see the full impact of preferential voting, but in the main categories I’m seeing a split in BNA. The two systems give two different winenrs.

thanks, yeah i’ll use grammy direct website from now on. But I can’t edit OP links without deleting the whole thread unfortunately.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 1, 2021 at 2:48 pm #1204075044The Grammys website has the occasional glitch. How does Calvin Harris have a nomination from 1984?
Did you also notice on nominations day how Julian Lage’s previously nominated work “Tomorrow Is the Question” showed up again on Improvised Jazz Solo?
