“The 2020 Grammy Awards fell off enough to hit a new low in the Nielsen ratings.
In the time zone adjusted fast nationals, the Sunday awards telecast on CBS drew a 5.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 18.7 million viewers. That is down a scant 3% in the key demo and 6% in total viewers compared to last year’s telecast, which drew a 5.6 rating and 19.9 million viewers. However, this year’s telecast is now the lowest-rated in Grammys history. The least-watched Grammys was in 2006, with 17 million viewers.”

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2020 at 4:10 pm #1203322674That’s kind of a given when there is a sweep. Everyone knew that Billie was going to win everything once she started steam rolling. I’m sure most viewers got bored of hearing essentially the same speech over and over again.

There’s a thread about Worst Sweeps and before I chose mine I went to Wikipedia just to check on Adele’s 25 ceremony and man, go check that list of performers out and then come back to this year’s performers. It’s embarrassing.

The problem wasn’t that people weren’t tuning in and then tuning out of the Grammys, it’s that they weren’t tuning in at all – Billie’s sweep was irrelevant.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 1, 2020 at 9:03 am #1203323683This was expected. No, not because of Billie or Ariana, but because award show ratings are declining in general. But the Grammys still remain incredibly relevant. They managed to out trend Kobe on Twitter, who completely took over the trends before the show, and reached a new social media peak in interactions & impressions.
Young people just don’t have cable anymore.

This is honestly correct. I don’t know very many people in their 20s or 30s that have basic cable anymore. They’d rather spend their money where the content is: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, Apple+, Disney+.
If the Grammys want a younger audience, they should probably leave CBS for Netflix.

Last year when they had a decent list of performers they went up. So not all shows ratings are declining. I think next year if Beyoncé, Adele and Gaga will be performing it’ll probably go up as well especially if Adele’s next era is popular.

They’re tied to CBS until 2026.
And Netflix is probably not an appealing option because the highlight of the Grammys, like most award shows, is watching everything unfold live.
The current model of a live TV broadcast with an emphasis on Twitter and YouTube after that is probably fine. This is how most award shows are consumed in the modern age.

Last year they went up by a mere 0.08 million views from the 2018 ceremony, that is hardly something noteworthy.
Adele can bring in ratings because her key demographic is one who still watches television (to be blunt, old people). Billie & Ariana’s key demographics are teenagers and young adults, who mostly follow the show on social media and watch through illegal streams.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 1, 2020 at 12:47 pm #1203323939Honestly, Broadcasting certain moments on streaming would be a monumental part of streaming. I mean they could move to ABC after 2026 and then put on the actual ABC network then Hulu and Disney+, that way they could the usual televised part for the 40s+ audience and the streaming for the other audience.
And it’s not like they haven’t streamed the Grammys online before. Come on, the other 76 awards were streamed on the Grammy website.
And it would be nice to listen to your audience. Executives only care about money because that is what brings in the audience, so why wouldn’t you want to appeal to the audience? Stop snubbing urban acts, especially when Urban acts have been increasingly popular.
