Hey guys! Last year, user Miss Americana made revisited ceremonies from every year til the current one, and I though it would be a good idea to revive that thread. This time, we will focus on the past 26 years, starting with the year where committees were first introduced in the General Field: 1996. Feel free to discuss anything about each ceremony, as well as ranking the GF winners if you’d like.

    38TH GRAMMY AWARDS; February 28th, 1996.

This year was the first year with committees in the General Field categories, largely due to backlash over nominations looking too old-leaning the past year, with wins for artists like Tony Bennett in AOTY. So, it makes sense that the Grammy’s chose a more refreshing pick: Alanis Morissette’s iconic album, Jagged Little Pill. Morissette was the biggest winner that nightc taking home 4 Grammys. Shockingly though, Morissette lost Best New Artist to Hootie & the Blowfish. Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose” won both Record and Song of the Year.

    ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Winner: Alanis Morissette – Jagged Little Pill
    Mariah Carey – Daydream
Michael Jackson – HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I
    Joan Osborne – Relish
    Pearl Jam – Vitalogy

    RECORD OF THE YEAR
Winner: Seal – “Kiss From A Rose”
Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men – “One Sweet Day”
    Coolio – “Gangsta’s Paradise”
Joan Osborne – “One of Us”
    TLC – “Waterfalls”

    SONG OF THE YEAR
Winner: “Kiss From A Rose” (Seal)
“I Can Love You Like That” (All 4 One)
    “One of Us” (Joan Osborne)
“You Are Not Alone” (Michael Jackson)
    “You Oughta Know” (Alanis Morissette)

    BEST NEW ARTIST
    Winner: Hootie & the Blowfish
    Brandy
    Alanis Morissette
    Joan Osborne
    Shania Twain

How I would’ve awarded the General Field.

Album of the Year: Daydream — Mariah Carey
Record of the Year: One Sweet Day – Mariah Carey & Boyz 2 Men
Song of the Year: You Oughta Know – Alanis Morrisette
Best New Artist: Brandy or Alanis Morrisette

4 “Pop-adjacent” female artists from various genres splitting votes against 1 mid, bland, safe Vanila Rock band.

In optimized lineups, Alanis, Brandi and Shania could’ve all potentially won.

I see how Alanis split votes with Shania & Joan.

Alanis should’ve swept the 3/4 and Mariah should’ve won Record.

Hootie & The Blowfish were very big, so perhaps it was just that. And yeah, having four female artists there might’ve helped.

    39TH GRAMMY AWARDS; February 26th, 1997.

The 39th Grammy Awards were quite interesting due to the lack of a major sweeper (4 or more awards). The top winner of the night was producer and songwriter Babyface, who took home Grammys for Best R&B Song (“Exhale”), Record of the Year (as a producer on “Change the World”), and Producer of the Year. Eric Clapton’s “Change the World” took home Record and Song of the Year (although Clapton didn’t write it, so he wasn’t credited for the win), while Celine Dion’s massive blockbuster Falling into You took home Album of the Year. This year is one of the few where every AOTY nominee picked up an award. Newcomer LeAnn Rimes became the first country act to win Best New Artist, as well as the youngest winner (at 14 years old).

    ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Winner: Celine Dion – Falling into You
    Beck – Odelay
    Fugees – The Score
The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Various Artists – Waiting to Exhale (Soundtrack)

    RECORD OF THE YEAR
Winner: Eric Clapton – “Change The World”
Tracy Chapman – “Give Me One Reason”
Celine Dion – “Because You Loved Me”
    Alanis Morissette – “Ironic”
    The Smashing Pumpkins – “1979”

    SONG OF THE YEAR
Winner: “Change The World” (Eric Clapton)
“Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion)
    “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” (Whitney Houston)
    “Blue” (LeAnn Rimes)
“Give Me One Reason” (Tracy Chapman)

    BEST NEW ARTIST
    Winner: LeAnn Rimes
    Garbage
    Jewel
    No Doubt
    The Tony Rich Project

Politicians having more Grammys than let’s say Jimi Hendrix and Bjork is definitely a choice haha

6th Avenue Heartache should’ve won Best Rock Performance by Group or Duo & Best Rock Song.

    40TH GRAMMY AWARDS; February 25th, 1998.

The 40th Grammy Awards were characterized by a lot of rather forgotten winners. Bob Dylan picked up Album of the Year for Time Out Of Mind, considered by many as one of his best albums and his comeback record. Dylan was also the subject of an uncomfortable moment when artist Michael Portnoy, who was hired as a background performer for Dylan, ripped off his shirt and stood up next to the AOTY winner with the phrase “Soy Bomb” written on his chest. Despite being a memorable night for Dylan, the rest of the nominees were rather forgotten, including Paula Cole taking home Best New Artist, and Shawn Colvin taking home Song and Record of the Year for her AC hit “Sunny Came Home”. Colvin was also interrumpted, but while accepting Song of the Year, when O.D.B came up stage out of nowhere. James Taylor also became the first – and as of now only – artist to win Pop Vocal Album without any supporting pop nominations, beating out Cole, two-time pop field winner that night Sarah McLachlan, pop winners Jamiroquai, and legendary band Fleetwood Mac. Aretha Franklin delivered a performance for the ages of “Respect”.

    ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Winner: Bob Dylan – Time Out Of Mind
    Babyface – The Day
    Paula Cole – This Fire
    Paul McCartney – Flaming Pie
    Radiohead – OK Computer

    RECORD OF THE YEAR
Winner: Shawn Colvin – “Sunny Came Home”
Paula Cole – “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?”
Sheryl Crow – “Everyday Is A Winding Road”
    Hanson – “MMMBop”
    R. Kelly – “I Believe I Can Fly”

    SONG OF THE YEAR
Winner: “Sunny Came Home” (Shawn Colvin)
    “Don’t Speak” (No Doubt)
“How Do I Live” (LeAnn Rimes/Trisha Yearwood)
    “I Believe I Can Fly” (R. Kelly)
“Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?” (Paula Cole)

    BEST NEW ARTIST
    Winner: Paula Cole
    Fiona Apple
    Erykah Badu
    Hanson
    Puff Daddy
