    I wake up to this!

My thoughts: I mean there weren’t the names we were hoping for, but at least it’s some progress. I mean it gives more voices to Black musicians way more than it did undermine them. I mean they didn’t change of the predominantly “white” categories. No they decide to give more voices to POC, whether it was in Latin, R&B and rap.

Starting off with the “Urban Contemporary switch”, I mean it was terrible to bein with. I mean “progressive” doesn’t sound cool, but again it was well needed for such a derogatory category. Also, it is kind of telling that it took protesting and riots to make this rule change… but you know America. I know why people are pressed on the issue… but progressive R&B makes total sense. I mean the contemporary r&b is always changing, so the sounds of Channel Orange to Starboy to Cuz I Love You. And well it’s competing in r&b, so why wouldn’t you want to call it that? I don’t know why they couldn’t lump the r&b albums into one category, but ehhh. I will take Progressive R&B over Urban Contemporary.

BNA, I would love to hear why they gave the artist a BNA nod if they don’t what to specificy what is and isn’t a BNA pick. That leaves so much for interpretation. Roddy Ricch, Lauv, Lewis Capaldi, FKA twigs can all compete in the category. Also, that could also diminish Jay Electronica, but honestly it was better if was not it. So I mean just come out and say why they were awarded the nomination and how “they maintained relevancy this year”.

The Melodic Rap Category is just why did have to clarify what it means? Maybe they thought rappers have to sing and rap wasn’t as good. Maybe the only qualification now is singing from rappers or at least having some pitch moments in your song instead of the cadence. I also read the last part and it said:

This performance requires a strong and clear presence of melody combined with rap cadence, and is inclusive of dialects, lyrics or performance elements from non-rap genres including R&B, rock, country, electronic or more. The production may include traditional elements of rap or elements characteristic of the aforementioned non-rap genres.

I think this change was for Old Town Road and other songs that follow that rap-[insert genre] hybrid of a song, rather than just a name change.

Ricch and Capaldi aren’t eligible. Twigs and Lauv could be, but I’d argue neither broke through this particular year.

    From the Recording Academy:

As such, the screening committees will be charged with determining whether the artist had attained a breakthrough or prominence prior to the eligibility year.

So I mean it is up to the Grammys. If they felt that Roddy Ricch gained breakthrough or prominence prior, without a debut record or 2 #1 singles, regardless of winning a Grammy for being featured on a song, then I mean then he is nominated in which would make him win.

His Grammy win automatically precludes him from consideration.

Yikes… well I mean at least that clears up more of a chance for Meghan Thee Stallion at least. Maybe they would go easy on Roddy since they literally released his debut album and not was once thought of as a serious contender since 202o. Rack in the Middle wasn’t even his song but a feature. I mean they better Lizzo his ass right now.

    Again, no.

If an artist is nominated (but does not win) for the release of a single or as a featured artist or collaborator on a compilation or another artist’s album before the artist has released at least five singles or an entire album (and becomes eligible in this category for the first time), the artist may enter this category in the eligibility year during which the artist’s fifth single/track or first album is released.

If he hadn’t won, he’d probably still be eligible. He won, so he’s out.
