Honey, Dua Lipa deserved her Best New Artist win. She was successful. H.E.R. is overrated and lacked hit singles.

It’s the Grammys, not the Billboard Awards.

24K Magic, weirdly, reminds me of Shape of Water winning Best Picture that same year. An acceptable, consensus win that’s not looked at as bad but it was definitely not the best of the category.

It was my second favorite album in that year’s lineup, so I definitely wasn’t mad about it. It wasn’t the best album in the category but it was a perfectly fine winner. Of course, I also didn’t think they would give it to the deserving winner, so that may affect how I feel about it.

Lionel Richie winning AOTY over Prince, Bruce, Tina and Cyndi. I think Bruno’s win is equivalent to his.

I don’t think it was as bad then as it is now. Can’t Slow Down had several hits, so it made sense. However, the albums that Richie was nominated with have all become certified classics.

Eh I love Bruno and I think any other year I would’ve been more welcoming to his wins but over works like 4:44 and DAMN, I just couldn’t support it all the way like that. It’s a perfectly digestible album that gave you 90s R&B vibes but no where near a masterpiece (I don’t think any of his albums are above an 8).

Get real! Toni Braxton deserved her win for “He Wasn’t Man Enough” as did TLC for “No Scrubs.”

Sorry, I was real when I said that Toni Braxton did not deserve to win for He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me. I think that she only won because Jill Scott’s Gettin’ In The Way and Erykah Badu’s Bad Lady split the votes.

Also, Heartbreak Hotel’s vocals stomp all over the vocals on No Scrubs.

Keith Urban’s win for Sweet Thing over other deserving nominees. I don’t grudge his other wins but Sweet Thing is so luck luster compared to other nominated Country men.

Brian Setzer Orchestra over Goo Goo Dolls. Iris is an ultimate classic with General Field presence. I dunno how it lose to Brian Setzer? (Maybe splitting the votes with Aerosmith)

Baha Men over Eiffel 65 or JLo.

^^^ Trace Adkins would’ve been my pick over the Keith Urban win. “All I Ask For Anymore” in my opinion is one of Trace’s best songs released to radio. (smiles)

God bless you and him and Keith always!!!

gaga should have been nominated to SOTY and ROTY for bad romance and have won these and the other 6 categories that were competing in 2011

I don’t get upset over Grammy wins (at least not anymore), perhaps over some of the people that missed out, but I don’t take the Grammys too seriously as an indicator of great music.

One example mentioned earlier was Lionel Richie win with ‘Can`t Slow Down’ over ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘Born in the USA’ (also great albums from Tina and Cyndi Lauper).

But commentators at the time predicted ‘Can`t Slow Down’, as it was the safe choice.

Richie will win this one, because he has a broad base of support throughout the record industry–from pop to R & B to country.

    Plenty of other ridiculous wins.

1998 AOTY Bob Dylan win with ‘Time Out of Mind’ over Radiohead ‘OK Computer’ – an example of an overdue win, rather than the best album. See also 2001 where Radiohead lost to an overdue win for Steely Dan and 2009 where they lost again, this time against Grammy favourite Alison Krauss and overdue win for former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant for ‘Raising Sand’
2014 The Macklemore wins over Kendrick
2018 The Bruno Mars 24K Magic sweep

In the long run, Grammy wins are often a game of name recognition, having a popular song on the radio, releasing in the right year against weak competition, collaborating with the right people, and creating something safe enough to gain a wide cross section of support.

If all that fails, maybe if you hang around long enough they might reward artists when voters feel they are overdue for a win.

In the meantime, it can be fun predicting the results.

It blew me away when I first learned that Robert Plant never got any Grammy awards with his Led Zeppelin friends before singing with Alison and I still can’t believe it when its been 50 years now since his first Led Zeppelin album was released. (shaking my head)

God bless you and him and his circle of friends always!!!

she should have swept over 25 and Lemonade for This Is Acting.

    Absolutely NO omg…..

Sia has great singles ,but her album is more like a collection of her “all-sound-alike” hits.

    Bon Iver: Best New Artist

I personally think Nicki should’ve won.

Mariah leaving with 0 awards back in 1996 was also a damn crime.

Get real!  Nicki Minaj did NOT deserve to win Best New Artist over J. Cole that year.
