This was bound to happen without a panel, it’s no surprise that the Rock Performance winners from 2017-2019 were all deceased acts.

And the other 3 are a bunch of oldies.

You know what this feels like lol, imagine if in the 1970s if a Rock Category existed, instead of nominating new talent like The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Runaways and Susi Quatro, you nominate Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Ricky Nelson and a posthumous nomination for Buddy Holly.

I’m disappointed that John Mayer received no mentions for Sob Rock. It’s been some of his best work in years.

    Initial thoughts

    Rock Album
    1. Medicine At Midnight-Foo Fighters
    2. No One Sings Like You Anymore Vol. 1-Chris Cornell
    3. McCartney III-Paul McCartney
    4. Power Up-AC/DC
    5. Capitol Cuts – Live From Studio A-Black Pumas

Foo Fighters are obviously huge darlings but this particular project wasn’t really that notable. I can see Chris or Paul upsetting because of that. AC/DC and Black Pumas are just lazy name-checks with no real chance of a win.

    Rock Performance

    1. Nothing Compares 2 U-Chris Cornell
    2. Making A Fire-Foo Fighters
    3. Shot In The Dark-AC/DC
    4. Know You Better (Live From Capitol Studio A)-Black Pumas
    5. Ohms-Defttones

Chris Cornell covering Nothing Compares 2 U sounds too baity to bet against. However, since I think FF are winning Rock Album, they could probably win here as well. As I said with rock album, I think AC/DC and Black Pumas are just lazy namechecks that have no real shot at winning. The Deftones nomination is surprising but I think that’s as far as they’re getting.

    Best Rock Song
    1. Waiting On A War-Foo Fighters
    2. Find My Way-Paul McCartney
    3. The Bandit-Kings Of Leon
    4. Distance-Mammoth WVH
    5. All My Favorite Songs-Weezer

Really torn on this and I can see everyone but Weezer winning. As I said already, I expect FF to win Rock Song which makes me think they’re the frontrunners here. Find My Way is pretty baity and there was even a remix with Beck earlier this year. The Bandit was a huge triple a hit. Distance is by the son of a rock legend who unfortunately passed away last year.

    Best Alternative Album

    1. Daddy’s Home-St. Vincent
    2. If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power-Halsey
    3. Jubilee-Japanese Breakfast
    4. Collapsed In Sunbeams-Arlo Parks
    5. Shore-Fleet Foxes

I’m just gonna play it safe here and go with St. Vincent. Nine-inch nails could carry Halsey but I doubt it. Daddy’s Home got good enough reviews even if isn’t nearly as acclaimed as Masseduction was.

Rock performance should be split in two categories: Solo performance and group/duo performance

I agree completely, that would solve numerous problems straight away.

You might be overthinking this one. Mammoth, Leon, and Weezer all missed Rock Album. This should easily be between Foo Fighters and Paul. I would actually say Weezer might be the distant third since “All My Favorite Songs” got some pop airplay and was all over alternative radio this year.

Jbrekkie submitting to Rock is very interesting to me. The album gives me indie pop vibes and I did not see the rock elements in Be Sweet until now. I’m glad she got in her album has been on repeat all year!

I still think rock voters are played out. Had the voters been younger, transparent soul would have been a lock. One of the most popular rock songs this year and didn’t receive recognition…

kinda sad that jbrekkie and st vincent didn’t submit for best engineered album (non-classical), especially jbrekkie, the music composition is one of the best things about the album</p>
