Lizzo too.
Lizzo is still seen as “that goofy big girl”. They’ll give her some wins here and there for successful singles. But I doubt AOTY is coming unless under the perfect circumstances. Also, while Lizzo has a few hits songs, her albums don’t do all that well commercially compared to many of the big mainstream pop acts. I doubt SZA can win. Her album and image definitely don’t have enough middle aged and older white people appeal. It’ll also be out for over a year old during voting.
ReplyCopy URLSZA can win it next year, I don’t even think Taylor is a threat, not with Midnights which a good album but not spectacular. Lana can be a dark horse but I think The National can be a serious threat especially with current 10-nominees format.

So proud of Harry. Harry’s house is MY album of the year. Despite the understandable overdue narratives for others, that’s the album I listened to top to finish the most this year. I love Harry’s approach as an artist. And I think people that are nasty just are not interested in knowing more and that’s okay. Your loss.

It’s a solid enough album and certainly doesn’t stand out as a poor winner compared to many albums that have recently won AOTY. But it’s the same with Swift and Adele. They have success and are overall solid acts, but there are clearly a lot of privileges, middle aged + white appeal, biases that assist their victories. People have the right to acknowledge that. While Harry’s whole persona and how he markets himself is just cringe-y and cornball as hell to me, sorry, and the music and lame live performances aren’t good enough to make me like him despite that.

Last night’s winners better be glad for two things:
1) the secret committee was outed a few years back

ReplyCopy URLI rarely come to the music forum but I just wanted to say that the awards ecosystem is systemically biased against black women in major categories with industry awards groups (AOTY here, Actress/Director/Screenplay at the Oscars). White mediocrity will always be at an advantage unless something drastically changes.

They’re not biased against black artists. If a black artist makes a safe, boring album (see: Jon Batiste) or boring music (see: Silk Sonic) they can win. Innovative music from black musicians that challenge genres and are far more “urban” have a hard time breaking through. It’s a genre bias, not a race one.
