There’s absolutely nothing basic about Bruno’s music. Some of y’all presume a dramatic theme, faux-politics and/or feminine-vibe to be indicative of quality…WAP, Levitating, Break My Soul etc.
That’s all alright but let’s call a spade a spade. Personal preference does not equal quality. A user was even judging live performances by production design, Jheeze.
March 28, 2023 at 11:23 am #1205367192In other news, the deluxe version of R.A.M would be dropping in May. If there was ever a year for a deluxe edition to win AOTY, it’s this year. No current release stands out…to me.
March 28, 2023 at 11:26 am #1205367197It would be epic if sza became the first black woman to win Album of the year since Lauryn Hill in 1999.
It’s the way this easily should’ve been Beyoncé like three times now but go on, Grammy people.
March 28, 2023 at 11:35 am #1205367202Renaissance losing when it had probably the biggest pressure to date made me totally pessimistic about near future AOTY winners. I’m not predicting any r&b/hip-hop act to win for a long time. I will totally focus on safe records with few credited artists and with few or zero explicit songs.
March 28, 2023 at 11:40 am #1205367208Honestly Clownderbby, If the Grammys didn’t give Beyoncé Album of the Year for her most iconic album Lemonade, what makes y’all think they’ll give it to Sza? Sza has one Grammy and a whole bunch of losses. I doubt they’ll give her anything outside the r&b categories. Maybe a pop solo Grammy because Kill Bill is a bop!
Congratulations 12 Time Grammy Winner Taylor Swift!
All Too Well (The Short Film) -BEST MUSIC VIDEO!
March 28, 2023 at 1:04 pm #1205367283I don’t know. I think Bruno Mars is very talented and has a distinct feel to his music (even if it’s rooted in nostalgia, he does it like no one else) but his music doesn’t stand the test of time. Melodrama and DAMN are still culturally and musically relevant over something like 24K Magic. Even LTDO won’t be remembered as a defining hit of the decade or anything. It just makes his wins look eh in retrospect. They’re certainly not undeserving but I get why he has polarising reactions.
Like think about something like Adele winning AOTY for 21. A decision that most will agree feels more and more relevant and deserving each year. These are my favourite kinds of wins personally.

It’s honestly a Beyoncé-bias more so than anything, I think they would give it to sza just to spite her tbh…

I think it all depends on one’s social circle and attention mechanism. Both 24K Magic & LTDO are very much relevant in my own circle.
I liked Melodrama too but on a closer look, it never really resonated with the GP either in the past or present. In fact, neither Pure Heroine’s nor Melodrama’s current daily streams nears 24K Magic’s.
Additionally, the industry not only chose 24K Magic over Melodrama, they reinforced their decision with LTDO.

It’s not just Beyoncé-bias. Same thing happened to Jay-Z, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Mariah Carey…
March 28, 2023 at 2:06 pm #1205367374Get real! Bruno Mars’ music is NOT a vibe.
March 28, 2023 at 3:03 pm #1205367405Bruno is definitely not basic. He’s one of the best musicians, songwriters, live performers, & vocalists around. Not everyone can say that about their favorite artists.
March 28, 2023 at 3:23 pm #1205367422Melodrama was never winning AOTY. Kendrick Lamar should have won that year.
That year was a key example of vote splitting. Jay z and Kendrick vote split and Bruno slid in with votes from many genres.
March 28, 2023 at 3:32 pm #1205367426They would probably give Lizzo or H.E.R. AOTY before Beyoncé. They’re musicians and safe enough to appeal to the average voter.
I would love for SZA to win, but I don’t think the industry has fully embraced her style yet. She’s definitely the frontrunner in Progressive R&B. I hope the screening committee does not move her to Pop. SOS does not belong there.
March 28, 2023 at 4:59 pm #1205367478Hopefully SOS is moved to Pop so that SZA can save us from Swift winning BPVA.

Sadly, it’s not happening. SOS will end up in Progressive R&B Album.
