It’s been explained many times on here why the BRP should be abolished, but you’re clearly too dense to follow the reasoning.

You are always so aggressive when someone challenges your opinion. I didn’t insult you. I simply disagreed. Throw on a Tampon for goodness sake, or keep that aggression in the Emmys forum.

I’m not “too dense to follow the reasoning.” Your “reasoning” is that The Weeknd would have somehow been nominated in the general field if it weren’t for the BRP or if there was a straight popular vote when he clearly didn’t garner enough popular votes in the Pop field to be considered. He didn’t even make a six-nominee line-up in Pop Solo. He could have very well been #10 in the general field, and he would have still missed out without the BRP.

Anyway, I actually agree with rue and borisy. The top 4-5 should be automatically in, and the last 3-4 nominees should be chosen by the BRP. I always liked that idea than just flat out abolishing the BRP, which would solve absolutely nothing.

The BRP is essential. Whoever says they should be abolished has no idea about the horrors of years past. Even if worthy artists like Fiona are snubbed, good albums are highlighted. Yes, they make sucky decisions but they try to keep it balanced. And that’s good enough for now.

Are people saying that a panel is needed to judge the panel?

    Just kidding.

I fully know the “horrors” of pre-BRP days. This is a different time, and what’s happened here is a pretty gross overstep on the BRP’s part. It’s blatant corruption that needs addressing is all I’m saying.

Nah. The only obvious snub was ROTY for Blinding Lights. All the other choices are fully justified. And who knows? maybe the panel rightly judged that the song was just a pastiche of genres past and that its success was irrelevant. If you think about it the song is terrible, nonsensical and vacuous. Yes it is catchy but there are many people who wouldn’t like it.

you don’t see me complaining about the BRP leaving the pots and pans banging from Fiona. The BRP is fine.

They should publish the top 20 in all 4 GF categories or other tops weeks before nominations, just like the oscars do with their shortlists. That’s transparency.

Good for you. I’ll always think the BRP is outdated and in need of reforming or abolishing.

What I will agree on is that it needs to be more transparent. the top 20 should be published as a long list, at least.

We typed the same thing at the same time. The first time I ever agreed with maxinho.

I do think that publishing the top 20 will bring a little bit more outrage from people who think their choice was “Snubbed” because it was a top 20. In contrast, when an album makes the Mercury Prize Shortlist, for example, it is an honor. Maybe they should give a nomination diploma to all the top 20.

I have my doubts that Blinding Lights made the top 20

Circles was probably ahead of it in BPSP, making it 8th at the bare minimum. Wouldn’t be surprised if Stupid Love also beat it. If it couldn’t get support from the pop field, then why would it beat other songs that had support from various genres?

Not to mention, I find it weird that the BRP wouldn’t just put the Weeknd into SOMETHING. They had to know there’d be backlash

! The claim in this post is disputed

If this is true, why wouldn’t Harvey Mason Jr. just say it? Instead he’s giving nonsensical answers and praying it all goes away.

Blinding Lights/After Hours not making the top 20 would be shocking but at least it’s a concrete reason.

valuing quality vs. the charts vs. uniqueness vs. veteran-status changes every year based on the narrative of their white front runner. it is never consistent.

and even in a year where “quality” was part of the general field, Brittany Howard got shut out despite her cross-genre appeal.
