If the Grammy winners were chosen by the actual consumers of music, I think Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Adele, and Nicki Minaj would dominate in their perspective fields.
ReplyBTS, Nicki Minaj and Taylor… basically anyone with stans that are willing to spam to get a trophy. That’s why the Grammys will never be fan-voted.
I see both good and bad with that. You have Artist with small fan bases that deserves to be rewarded for their hard work but at the same time. The committee seems to be about who they like and who they don’t like. If you’re not kissing a$$ or trying to be everyone’s BFF in the industry, they will spite you even though you deserve it.

Going off this year, had it been voted by the public:
- Taylor would’ve won EVERY category she was up for (except Music Video)
- Anitta or Latto would’ve won BNA instead of Samara
- Coldplay would’ve won AOTY (thanks to BTS stans)
- Adele would’ve won ROTY
- Kendrick would’ve swept the rap categories
- My Universe would’ve won BPDGP
- BTS would’ve won Best Music Video (Taylor’s only loss)
- Mary J. Blige would’ve swept the R&B categories
- Harry or Lizzo would’ve won Pop Solo
- BTS/Coldplay would’ve won BPDGP instead of Sam/Kim
As far as last year (& I won’t go back any further):
- Billie, Taylor, or Olivia would’ve won AOTY
- Olivia COULD’VE swept the Big 4 (but unlikely get SOTY & ROTY due to Billie & Silk Sonic)
- BTS would’ve won BPDGP
- Doja Cat or Lil Nas X would’ve won Melodic Rap
- Doja Cat & Saweetie would’ve won Rap Song
The big three fandoms would dominate: Army, Swifties and Harries. There are fewer Army since they went on hiatus but the whole of kpop fandom would probably show up to vote for the Grammys. They beat Taylor’s fans and her fans beat Harry’s. It’s already played out at AMAs, VMAs and People’s Choice.

I think it’s a mess now because the committee members are basing their choices on personal feelings towards the artist. Artists shouldn’t have to try to be everyone’s BFF in the industry, artists shouldn’t have to hold their tongue when they know they are being mistreated in the industry in fear of not getting the recognition they deserve, etc. That’s why I personally wouldn’t mind if it was fan voted.
ReplyCopy URLThere are no committees now, just voters disconnected from reality and even with popular vote we would have disasters like Justin winning something in 2022. The other consequence to think about is that without prestige many stars wouldn’t even bother to attend. did you see the AMAs?

The Grammys are taken seriously because they have no fan voted awards. Nobody bothers with the VMAs and the AMAs for this very reason and the BBMAs are predictable because it’s literally just the results of their charts. The Grammys being voted by thousands of their peers is what makes them prestigious awards.
We can argue till we go blue in the face that they’re unfair or out of touch or whatever, but especially now that there’s no panel for the GF, winning a Grammy means your peers & exects voted for you straight up and that’s insane validation for an artist (with all the caveats this has, which were exposed in the Variety article).
That said, this year Harry would’ve swept if it was fan voted, except maybe for SOTY which could’ve gone to either him or Taylor. The core Beyhive that actually would’ve voted for Beyoncé is not that big, in comparison to Harry and Taylor’s fanbases (but she has a lot of love from a GP that wouldn’t bother voting). BTS would’ve won pop duo and BMV. I think they may have tried to vote for AOTY but probably would’ve focused on the other awards since AOTY would’ve been more of an indirect award. Beyoncé would’ve won everything else she was nominated for. Kendrick would’ve won all his genre nominations. Machine Gun Kelly would’ve won a Grammy.

I agree with everything you said. People used to care about the VMAs when they weren’t fan voted except for one (Viewer’s Choice). You’d be surprised on who would get a VMA. For example:
1999 VMA for Video of the Year nominees:
* Lauryn Hill (Doo Wop That Thing)
* Korn (Freak on a Leash)
* BSB (I Want it That Way)
* Ricky Martin (Livin la Vida Loca)
* Will Smith (Wild Wild West)Lauryn Hill won that year. I can guarantee you had it been fan voted like it is now, BSB or Ricky Martin would’ve won.
Now, the VMAs are a cheap predictable joke. With all the awards being fan voted (unless they’re tech), everyone knows who’ll win. No point in any actual celebrities showing up like before. That’s why you have influencers & SM stars there.
