First off she isn’t just a random 17 year old that just wrote a song and made it debut crazy numbers. She’s on a popular Disney plus show that is about singing (high school music the music the series the longest title ever ugh), and she already has a song that has almost 200 million streams from that show that charted for a week or two and is certified gold. It wasn’t a massive hit but she already had a small fan base. Just because you didn’t know her doesn’t mean others didn’t.

Secondly there are other reasons it is spreading around. One is that people genuinely like this song a lot. And they listen to it multiple times as you can see many have said on this thread. So others have told people to listen to it. I got a text from 5 people to listen to it and I have also told others to listen to it since it’s so good. Secondly tik tok. There’s a trend where people fall back on like their bed when the bridge starts similar to how she does it in the music video. She showed these on her Instagram showing she wanted this to become a trend

Lastly the drama from the song. I don’t think it’s as a big of a factor as the above reasons since people actually like the song but it has given a lot of press. Anyways she liked the boy that played her ex in the show (but then they kinda still like each other I need to rewatch the show) and he told her he would wait till she was 18 so he could date her but then he decided to date another Disney star. So that’s the whole blonde girl thing that mentioned In the song. Pretty great theory if you ask me.

Sorry guys that’s a long post but I really don’t want her to be labeled that because I don’t think she is an industry plant

Driver’s License is a beautiful song. I have it on repeat. I can see why Taylor Swift has given this talented young lady her seal of approval.

FINALLY! We have another main pop girl (on the rise) that writes her own songs. She legit writes the songs, she wrote HSM song alone and has posted a lot of songs she wrote during quarantine and she has talent and she could even massively improve after time. There is potential. I LOVE that she’s writing her own songs and that she is the reason for her fame. Come on!!!

Taylor Swift’s fans are literally running Gen Z music industry.

This is a WONDERFUL song. I’ve had it on repeat for DAYS. Olivia has an incredibly strong voice as a singer AND as a songwriter, and when she debuts at #1 it’ll be one hundred percent deserved.

I agree that she needs to sustain hype, but I don’t think she needs to begin a full rollout right now because with HSMTMTS season two on its way (and her reunion with the co-star this drama is all about), there’ll still be enough chatter around her that she can take some time to put more stuff together if she doesn’t already have it. Though from how dedicated and passionate she seems to be about songwriting, I wouldn’t be surprised to know she already has an album’s worth of songs written.

I hope she stays with this producer as well. Rodrigo’s writing is obviously the highlight, but I think the production quality is definitely being underestimated as a factor for how well the song is doing. This could’ve been a typical piano ballad, but it was very well put together, so I hope she stays with whoever produced this in the future, they’ve obviously got a good thing going.

As long as she releases a couple more songs and no one on a Megan-type level pops up, I think she’s got the 2022 Best New Artist pretty much locked up.

How can she be an industry plant? The girl wrote this song after she got a driving license lol. Industry plants are usually heavily promoted, playlisted and get their songs from songwriting camps. Miley, Selena, Ariana and Demi were way closer to industry plants since they really got pushed hard and didn’t write their songs but this hasn’t been send to radio and no heavy playlisting.

Ariana Grande makes cheap disposable music void of any artistic merit, while Olivia is more organic and less mainstream sell-out music persona. Artists like Grande are seen like kids and teens artists just like Justin Bieber, when they hit early 30s, they are replaced by the next teen icon since they don’t have marketability(see Katy Perry).

Ariana’s presence in music has continuously grown over the years had not shown any signs of slowing down. Her streaming power is unmatched and that’s where it counts these days. Regardless of how you feel about her music, her voice is what got her here. She isn’t going anywhere anytime soon even with her being in her late 20s.

Another thing to point out about industry plant and why she isn’t one is because the big playlists only added her when her song became the most streamed song on all platforms and not the other way around which shows she isn’t one

I agree the producing is great and a key reason on why it sounds so good. Both people did their job perfectly

    1) Industry plant almost always has sexist connotations. How many male artists are ever referred to as “industry plants”?

    2) If the definition of an “industry plant” is someone who receives a massive push — then all of GD’s faves are arguably bigger “industry plants”. On Spotify, Rodrigo’s song was 15th on New Music Friday. She was not added to TTH until today and is only at #23 despite having the #1 song on Spotify. She has not received any support from radio, nor did she have a radio deal go out with the song. All of this song’s success is organic support from TikTok and word-of-mouth.

    3) Rodrigo does not fall under the correct definition of an “industry plant” either – i.e. someone who presents themselves as being original and DIY, but actually has the backing of powerful forces such as a major label. She is openly signed to a major label (Interscope) and came from 2 Disney shows.

    4) She probably has BNA 2022 locked up and y’all will have to deal with that. Her EP is also going to be huge.

Someone on twitter posted a compilation of snippets of two songs Olivia showed on tik tok long ago, apparently spontaneous songs she wrote and sang with the piano, they were like 10 second snippets but they sounded really good…one sounded VERY taylor swift (basically London boy tipe of song) and the other kinda like a Billie Eilish ballad but less whispery. Anyways this were really short snippets, im sure they are longer ones on tik tok (i wouldnt know cause im too old to download tik tok, lol), but they showed this girl CLEARLY writes the songs herself, that she has massive talent and, if paired with a good producer she could make a really impressive album.

Her EP could even hit number one if timed right and correctly promoted.

Hailee Steinfeld was a failed label product who never reached these heights with her music, let alone this quickly. Steinfeld abandoned a promising career in Hollywood for two underperforming EPs, one of which didn’t reach the BB200, and not a single Hot 100 entry since 2017. Meanwhile, Olivia is expected to debut her career in the top 10 when most people don’t even know her name, just like Ariana Grande did in 2013. In spite of the fact that Steinfeld’s platform as an actress was bigger than both Grande & Rodrigo’s. Artists like Steinfeld, Bebe Rexha, Madison Beer, Anne-Marie, Zara Larsson never blew up because they’re no longer marketable to the general public. Kids nowadays prefer rappers and female artists/songwriters like Billie Eilish. Even Ariana noticed a shift and stopped doing dance pop “bops” that are only marketable to white gay men and started being in charge of her own shit after the Dangerous Woman era. It’s also one of the reasons why Taylor Swift remained stable in the industry and artists like Katy Perry fade away.

I do like Olivia and I wish her all success.

I hope she becomes really successful. Like top of the world successful. Hopefully she gets a good label and a GREAT manager.

She needs to be BIG. Like big commercial pop girl big. Consistent hit songs, albums, etc.

They need to fix it and not mess it up.

She needs to be with WARNER.
