She lost her Best Female R&B Vocal nomination to Anita Baker’s Rapture and lost the Album of the Year.

(Of course it’s THE Anita Baker)

Also the fact that it only had two (2) nominations!?

Edit: Sorry it got 3 nominations lmao. Still (3) nominations!? and ZERO wins.

Among the nominees that year, only Janet never win a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Aretha has 11, Chaka has 3, Anita has 5 and Patti has 1. At least Whitney and Mariah managed to get one before the category got retired.

Velvet Rope is my personal favorite from Janet Jackson. The album is just masterpiece, it only won one Grammy for Best Music Video ( Got ’til it’s Gone). It should’ve won so much more.

    Rest in Peace MF DOOM

    Rest in Peace DMX

Janet should have won Album of The Year for Rhythm Nation and I would not have been mad if she won Album of the Year for Control.

Love Will Never Do With You would have been a worthy nominee for Pop Female Performance.

Feedback should have been a bigger hit.

Yes! Louder! Definitely should’ve had one.

“Alright” should’ve got “Best R&B song” (Grammys ’90). MC Hammer (“U Can’t Touch This”) beating out Janet for “Best R&B Song” was so unprecedented! Considering the song won “Best Rap Performance”. It was probably because it was before the Rap categories were extended. (Thank god they did) It’s crazy to think about it.

Honey, according to the Grammy website, Janet Jackson was an Album of the Year nominee in 1996 for Michael Jackson’s HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I.  I did NOT know that.

Looking at all the possible nominations Janet should have received it gives her no justice and it just sucks overall but I’m happy she has at least five of them. Shame to the grammys over the years  from Control,Rhythm Nation 1814 and the Janet album should have scored Janet up to 10 Grammys and Velvet rope should have earned her 5 grammys alone.  Sucks now that she is older she still wont recieved new honor from the grammys.

She (and The Jacksons btw) should definitely be awarded a lifetime achievement Grammy in the near future.

I wonder where The Velvet Rope was submitted. Was it Pop Album or R&B Album?

I wondered the same. I have a feeling she was submitted to Pop considering how the Grammys nominate Toni Braxton’s “Secrets” to pop than R&B. Velvet Rope if I’m not mistaken received only one nomination. Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for I Get Lonely. You can’t count “Got Til It’s Gone” because it only nominated (and won) for its music video.

“No Sleeep” in Best R&B Performance/Song

Did her label submit this to Pop Duo on purpose or was it moved by committee?

Either way it’s a incredibly frustrating stupid decision.

    1) Her label thinks a minor hit R&B slow jam would get into a consolidated pop field

    2) the committee listen to it and somehow thought, “this isn’t an R&B song”.

Yes i remember it was submitted to Pop Duo. I don’t know how they considered it as pop when it was very urban.

“No Sleeep” being sent to Pop Duo/Group is one of the worst cases of category fraud ever. That’s a pure R&B song.

Honey, The Velvet Rope could’ve been submitted to Best R&B Album and got snubbed.  Back in the day, R&B nominees were NOT just hit makers.  It was so much easier for obscure acts to get nominated in the 90’s.  Plus, 1998 had a plethora of amazing R&B albums in contention.
