Its only commercial footprint in the US was the Billboard Digital Songs chart, where it peaked at #50.
Previously the lowest charting Pop Solo nominee was Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Love So Soft’, which peaked at #47 on Billboard Hot 100.
Is Gaga our new Kelly? The perennial default namecheck in Pop when the field is dire?December 7, 2018 at 8:02 pm #1202693864
Why was a thread made for this? “Colors” never charted outside of the Alternative chart either.December 7, 2018 at 8:06 pm #1202693866
Nah, she was nominated because she’s everywhere atm.December 8, 2018 at 2:32 am #1202694063
i think that with the flooding of BH100, BUH100 & pop charts with rap songs & Grammy changes in voting (online voting allowed) and in membership (new, more diverse members), those charts will no longer be crucial to predict Pop Field nominees.
last year was telling. it was the first year that 3 of the 5 nominees in Pop Solo Performance didn’t reach top 10 on BH100 & 4 of the 5 nominees in the same category didn’t reach top 10 on Mainstream Pop (at the moment the voting ended).
that’s why this year I predicted Gaga to get a nod for Joanne. i’ve listened to all the submissions for Pop Solo that we knew of & it was really standing out to me this year. vocal performance was amazing. combining it with ASIB talk, Shallow being just released & remembering her performance from the 60th Grammys – it was all leading to her nom.
the more bizzare situation happened to me in Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Aguilera/Lovato, Backstreet Boys & Tony Bennett being nominated over Perfect, Pray For Me, Hunger & others.
only BSB charted on BH100 from those 3 & was still charting on crucial AC chart when the voting ended.
Fall In Line peaked at no. 101 on BUH100 while Tony Bennett’s song wasn’t even released as a single.
the last track/non-charter on BH100 nominated here was respectively Body + Soul by Bennett & Winehouse (it was so popularized thanks to Amy’s death) & Dearest by Black Keys with Ship To Wreck by Florence + the Machine (but it peaked at no. 114 on BUH100 & was no. 1 on TripleA chart).
btw, i still can’t believe that Better Now was nominated alongside Joanne, Havana or God Is a Woman. all three are great vocal performances while Better Now is vague Trap/Emo/Pop Rap Performance…December 8, 2018 at 9:06 am #1202694274
Can we just rename this the “Pop Solo” thread?December 8, 2018 at 9:24 am #1202694296This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.December 9, 2018 at 3:41 am #1202694967
Pop nominations are often about name recognition, just like that random Coldplay EP that was nominated in Best Pop Vocal Album last year.
There are literately hundreds, if not thousands of eligible songs in some categories, so voters pick a recognisable name and move on to the next category.December 9, 2018 at 9:10 am #1202695179
It’s nice cause this shows they could be starting to recognize incredible vocal performances over commercial success. Joanne IS one of the best vocal performances of the submitted songs, so who cares about the chartsDecember 9, 2018 at 9:14 am #1202695185
Honey, there is no need for this dumb ass thread. “Joanne” is NOT winning Best Pop Solo Performance.
2019 Grammy Award nominee:
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance - "Fall In Line"
Best Rap/Sung Performance - "Like I Do"
