I agree with most of her wins. She deserved ROTY for Bad Romance, Dance Recording for Dance in the Dark. I would swap those two for her ridiculous Pop Solo win for Joanne.

She only deserved to win the following:
2010 – Best Dance Recording – “Poker Face”

2010 – Best Dance/Electronic Album – The Fame

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 22, 2020 at 7:38 pm #1203357033She definitely deserved Album of the Year with The Fame Monster (and to the less extend, Born This Way), Song and Record of the year for Bad Romance and Shallow.
If she actually submitted them, Song nom for Born This Way and Record nom for The Edge of Glory.

Album of the Year for The Fame Monster (maybe).
Best Pop Collaboration for “Telephone.”
Best Pop Solo Performance for “Million Reasons.”
Record of the Year for “Shallow.”
Song of the Year for “Shallow.”February 25, 2020 at 8:06 am #1203359752Gaga stands out not as an artist who has been on the wrong end of the flip-flopping priorities of Grammy decision-makers. It’s incredible Eilish swept the 2020 GF with 1 Top 10 hit, whereas The Fame spawned 4 Top 10 hits (two #1), and earned Gaga 2 genre wins. Meanwhile, Just Dance – which took over 365 days to peak – being nom’d in 2009 prevented her from winning BNA in 2010, while Lizzo leveraged Truth Hurts from ’17 to get into 2020 GF and win BPSP.
The argument was always that commercial success, chart performance, impact on (in particular) pop music, etc. didn’t matter; yet, those were literally the standards we all used to judge entries for the big 4+ this year.
TF > TFM > BTW had 3+ Top 10 singles each, with at least 1 with longlasting impact on pop music. She’s incorporated edm, jazz, rock, r&b, and country influences yet despite artists like Beyonce/Lizzo/Rihanna/Taylor who compete in multiple genres, she has – beyond TF – been relegated to Pop.
To summarize below, I think that Gaga has deservedly won 11 Grammys thus far (Joanne [Piano] being a toss-up); but, should have an additional <b>6</b>. I didn’t include BMV here since that is kind of subjective and has been used as a consolation some years and is ?? other years.
BNA: 2010
AOTY: The Fame, 2010
ROTY: Pokerface, 2010; Bad Romance, 2011; Shallow, 2019
SOTY or BPSP: Edge of Glory, 2011
Major Toss-Ups: AOTY (TFM; 2011 + ASIB; 2020), SOTY (Shallow; 2019), BPSP (Million Reasons, 2018), Best Dance Recording (DITD; 2011), BSFVM (Til it Happens to You; 2016)
<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>2009 – 2010: The Fame</span>
The rules should have been revised much sooner as her stardom was rising well before the season was in full-swing; her album was unstoppable and her peak had begun during the voting period.
Should Have Won: BNA, AOTY, ROTY/SOTY (Pokerface)
<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>2010 – 2011: The Fame Monster</span>
It’s incredible that a hit as massive as Bad Romance was unable to secure a GF nomination; or, an album with 3 Top hits and noms for *3* different tracks was unable to take AOTY. The ‘overdue’ card has never applied to Gaga in the GF; after missing GF wins in 2010, AOTY would have been a no-brainer in other years. I won’t go as far as to say she should have won it, though.
Should Have Been Nom’d (+Win): ROTY/SOTY (Bad Romance)
Toss-Ups: AOTY, Best Dance Recording (DITD)
<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>2011 – 2012: Born This Way</span>
I would love an explanation on why Interscope submitted Judas (#10) and You & I (#6) to ROTY/SOTY/BPSP, when BTW (#1) and EOG (#3) charted higher and were more acclaimed. Adele was going to clean-up, but after 2 years of striking out + having an incredibly successful era, wins for BPSP+BMV would’ve been a fair allocation of wealth.
Also, BTW had such heavy dance and rock influences on it that it really is a shame that it was/is forced to compete with something like a “21.”
Should Have Been Nom’d (+Win): BMV (Born This Way), BPSP (Edge of Glory)
Should Have Been Nom’d: SOTY (Edge of Glory), ROTY (Born This Way)
<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>2018: Joanne</span>
A weak year where Gaga once again influenced pop music with her – overrated, IMO – Joanne LP and Grammy-bait Million Reasons. Sheeran deserved an award for his album given the commercial success, but Shape of You was problematic in so many ways for BPSP. She would’ve easily secured AOTY (top-selling female) and SOTY noms in 2019 with the expansion to 8.
Similar to BTW, Joanne also deserved to be recognized for incorporating country and other sounds into mainstream pop, IMO. Spotify classifies it as Country — the Grammys need to catch-up with genre bending sounds.
Should Have Been Nom’d: SOTY (Million Reasons)
Toss-Ups: BPSP (Million Reasons)
<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>2019 – 2020: A Star Is Born </span>
The beginning of the worst snubs, as she is nearing the end of her GF viability and it coincided with weak years; she should have won her first GF.
Had Interscope issued a re-release of ASIB in 03/19 with ‘ARUTW’ (ultimately still getting #41, a SOTY nod, but whose streams indicate Top 3 potential) single, ASIB would have (deservedly) won AOTY in my opinion.
As it were, ASIB had the same number of #1 and Top 10 hits as the winning album (1), and 3 songs on the Hot 100 top 50. It also had 3 songs total nominated for Grammy awards (2 in the GF), with 2 winning. It’s ommission from AOTY lineup was a total and complete snub.
Should Have Won: SOTY, 2019 (Shallow)
Toss-Ups: ROTY, 2019 (Shallow); AOTY, 2020

The Fame Monster*
Born This Way lost to 21.

The Fame was not the only hit-studded album in that year’s lineup. The Beyoncé, BEP, and Taylor Swift albums all spawned several smash hits.
Billie may not have had multiple top ten hits from her album, but she had way more momentum than any of the other nominees. Ariana Grande’s album was a frontloaded success, and Lizzo’s album was not posting anywhere close to the same numbers Billie’s was. Likewise, Lady Gaga had a huge 2009, but Taylor Swift was outperforming her in almost every metric.
And Lizzo’s case wouldn’t have been the same because she was nominated for the first time this year; Gaga had been nominated prior to being nominated across the board in the GF. It’s unfortunate that she got disqualified as a result, but the rule at the time was that previous nominees weren’t eligible.
