It’s incredible Eilish swept the 2020 GF with 1 Top 10 hit, whereas The Fame spawned 4 Top 10 hits (two #1), and earned Gaga 2 genre wins. Meanwhile, Just Dance – which took over 365 days to peak – being nom’d in 2009 prevented her from winning BNA in 2010, while Lizzo leveraged Truth Hurts from ’17 to get into 2020 GF and win BPSP.

The Fame was not the only hit-studded album in that year’s lineup. The Beyoncé, BEP, and Taylor Swift albums all spawned several smash hits.

Billie may not have had multiple top ten hits from her album, but she had way more momentum than any of the other nominees. Ariana Grande’s album was a frontloaded success, and Lizzo’s album was not posting anywhere close to the same numbers Billie’s was. Likewise, Lady Gaga had a huge 2009, but Taylor Swift was outperforming her in almost every metric.

And Lizzo’s case wouldn’t have been the same because she was nominated for the first time this year; Gaga had been nominated prior to being nominated across the board in the GF. It’s unfortunate that she got disqualified as a result, but the rule at the time was that previous nominees weren’t eligible.

The fact that she hasn’t won in the general field remains a travesty

I STAN Lady Gaga and Roddy Ricch

The Fame Monster* Born This Way lost to 21.

I noticed the typo. Both losses were deserving still. Not to sound spiteful.

… And Lizzo’s case wouldn’t have been the same because she was nominated for the first time this year; Gaga had been nominated prior to being nominated across the board in the GF.

My statement/comparison of The Fame’s success vs. what Billie accomplished this year with her debut was just to point out how gauging an artist’s Grammy “worthiness” changes frequently. Had Gaga released a pop album as acclaimed and commercially successful as The Fame, with 4 top 10 hits on it, she would have been the hands-down favorite for the major categories. Chart position was talked about here as a definitive marker for ROTY/SOTY contenders, whereas during Gaga’s early years, we saw the likes of Beck, Mumford & Sons, Herbie Hancock, and The Suburbs winning AOTY, for example.

I think Billie had little competition this awards season, though I do truly believe ASIB should have been nominated and as a biased Gaga stan, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be competitive. It had a #1 hit that smashed worldwide, commercial success despite being a movie soundtrack, incorporated multiple genres, and 3 of its songs were nominated for awards, with 2 of them winning.

RE: Lizzo, I understand why Gaga was ineligible and Lizzo eligible; but, the fact that the rules were revised right after the 2010 season means they could have revised them a year sooner if they wanted is all. In reality, BNA should be Breakthrough Artist, since it continues to be an inconsistent indicator of rising talent in the industry.

Get real!  “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face” did NOT deserve to win Record of the Year.  You little monsters have lost your minds.
