Here come Wanda with the “controversial” take. Mariah wasn’t a particularly “risk taking” artist. And she did put out a lot of cheesy ballads early in her career. But she also popularized fusing R&B/pop with rap, popularized the remix, and many of her hit songs still hold up as bops. While the impact and influence of Butterfly as an album can’t be denied.
Mariah risked her label support when she released the rap collabs in daydream and then Butterfly.
She even was threatened by her label to stop doing black music and going back to contemporary pop from that time.
Her label did not support the idea and they stopped promoting her as they used to. She wasn’t allowed in the 90s to be a “risk taker”
Despite that mariah is a very versatile artist that crossover genres from hip hop, disco, gospel, rock, reggae, house, country, funk, grunge and latin pop.

The academy should apologize to mariah for treating her like a paula abdul kind of artist
Blame Tommy Motorola.

She lost to heavyweights like Erykah Badu, Anita Baker, Sheryl Crow, Whitney Houston, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, and Bonnie Raitt. However, she should have more than 5 Grammys.

I think they could have easily given Mariah Pop Collaboration and/or Pop Album in 1996, at least. I suspect there was some vote-splitting in Pop Collaboration and Joni Mitchell’s veteran status edged everyone else there. “Fantasy” was THE jam, but “No More ‘I Love You’s” was a good win in Pop Female. “I Apologize” was a great win in R&B Female; “Always Be My Baby” wasn’t even a single at that point, so it did well by getting in before its popularity. Her GF losses were fine by me.
I feel like we have this discussion every year. lol
ReplyCopy URLMay 29, 2023 at 5:47 am #1205444414I mean, the fact current SOTY holder could beat her out on her widest display of vocal range on a recording in Female Pop Vocal Performance 1992 (“Emotions” vs. “Something to Talk About”) goes to show Mariah might have never really been taken seriously by the Academy (though I as a matter of taste would’ve picked Bonnie between the two). Maybe they found her whistling a tad overrated/annoying?

I thought Bonnie Raitt was more deserving for I Can’t Make You Love Me for Pop Female over Something to Talk About.
ReplyCopy URLMay 30, 2023 at 11:48 am #1205445605I mean, it’s a joke to even discuss the Grammys being fair to someone like Mariah Carey.
Specifically, with the Butterfly album, she was announcing her departure from one of the most powerful men in the music industry. Additionally, there were a number of critics who felt the need to talk about her race back then and her so-called “switch” from Pop to R&B music.
Mariah definitely deserved to take home more Grammys than she has. So many artists have won more than her for non-singles and non-hits, so it’s just an eye roll at this point. As much as we love the Grammys (at times), this is the same awards body that has given Blue Ivy a Grammy, but not Diana Ross.

May 30, 2023 at 12:23 pm #1205445667Mariah’s big Year should have been 2005, she should have won Record of the Year for We Belong Together and Album of the Year for The Emancipation of Mimi.

I Can’t Make You Love Me was probably not submitted for any Grammy considerations for the year 1991.

I suspect they really ganged-up One Sweet Day on that category. How can it ignored despite the GF nomination? It’s the most surefire category for MC/B2M to win but lost.
