Yeesh. I love all five but none have been (or, in Whitney’s case, was) terribly consistent. If I had to do a ranking…

    1. Janet
    2. Madonna
    3. Whitney
    4. Mariah
    5. Celine

    This is a tough one…

Celine doesn’t have anywhere near the amount of hits as these other women (you could probably count them on one hand), but in terms of vocal quality and musicianship she is by far the most consistent of the group.

Mariah is easily most successful in terms of record sales. Mariah Carey, Emotions, Music Box, Fantasy and The Emancipation of Mimi are all absolute tour de forces and sold a bunch. She also has a whopping 18 number one Billboard hits, a record only surpassed by The Beatles (although I wouldn’t be surprised if Rihanna topped this feat in the next decade, she already has 14). However her record sales in the last few years are nothing like they once were, but I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that her most recent quality bop was Touch My Body in 2008 or Obsessed in 2009. I think a really good track could easily get her back in the game.

Janet is fab, but I just don’t rate her in the same category of icons as these other women. She is the best dancer however, and although Mariah and Madonna are the only ones of this group that I’ve seen live, I have no doubt Janet would probably put on a great show with all the bells and whistles.

If we were to base this discussion purely on the first half of Whitney’s career, she would win hands down. Her first few records and The Bodyguard soundtrack are pure magic, and some of her live performances were perfection. Although from the mid 90s she totally lost the plot and the quality of her voice was shot to pieces. It really is very sad.

In terms of image and brand, Madonna is second to none. She is unique in every sense of the word and has still released some pretty decent music in the past ten years or so. Her voice is nowhere near as good as the other ladies though.

I’m tempted to give it to Mariah, but not by much… I think I’ll go with:

    1. Mariah

    2. Whitney

    3. Madonna

    4. Celine

    5. Janet
