Beyoncé getting nominated for a live recording of Halo. A damn mess. I remember this forum erupted the morning of the announcement.

Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West” being nominated for Short Form Music Video (1995) is still totally WTF to me. Thank Jebus “Love Is Strong” and “Lucas with the Lid Off” were there as stiff competition lol.

“Boom Boom Pow” winning Short Form Music Video (2010) was also WTF for me. I don’t care how about all the futuristic special effects; “Wrong” and “Life in Technicolor II” were far more deserving.

Finally, for the handful of you who might care about this category, I’m still scratching my head at Claudia Brant winning Latin Pop Album this year… It’s because she’s an industry insider, right? I can’t think of any other reason she’d beat the likes of Natalia Lafourcade, Carlos Vives, and Pablo Alborán.

The whole love given by the Grammys for BEP during The E.N.D. era was quite surprising. Like, they weren’t really remembered anywhere else and if they didn’t swept nominations nobobody would have made a sound.

Yes! I believe Claudia works for the Academy or something likre that.

I have no idea how she won against 3 of the biggest names ever in Latin music.

Bubblin winning Rap Performance this year was bizarre. I still don’t understand how Anderson won when he was up against two massive #1 hits and a Cardi B hit.

Surprised no one have mentioned Backstreet Boys getting a nomination last year for Best Pop Duo/Group after almost 2 decades. No one expected that (especially considering they snubbed Ed Sheeran/Beyoncé in the same category with the 2nd biggest hit of the year “Perfect”).

Also Christina’s nomination for “Like I Do” in the Best Rap/Sung category was really random.

And of course Beck’s Colors and Gaga’s Joanne in Pop solo

The Pop solo and Pop duo/group nominees were really random last year

They were huge. Back to back monster hits. They were previous winners and previous GF nominees. With the exception of maybe Short Form Video, most people saw those nominations coming.

Coldplay getting into Pop Vocal Album in 2017 for Kaleidoscope EP felt really random to me. “Something Just Like This” was a really big hit, but it was nominated on its own in Pop Duo/Group and I don’t see how it carried the EP itself to a nomination. Especially since Melodrama, which got a nom in AOTY, didn’t get into the 6-album lineup.

And tie with a Grammy favorite.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some vote-splitting there.

Eartha’s “I’m Still Standing” in Female R&B Vocal Performance. I remember reading that this nomination was a shock because she was way too low-key and only really known in the Gospel sector. In that article, it was also implied that there was a panel that year, which would explain that nomination. I thought Faith Evans’ “I Love You” deserved that spot.

I would say Lalah Hathaway’s first win for R&B Performance when there were several people predicting the remix to How Many Drinks by Miguel and Kendrick Lamar to win. Then, there were other people who thought Love and War by Tamar Braxton had a good chance of winning that year.

Al Walser in Best Dance Recording for “I Can’t Live Without You.” He managed this surprise nomination through some shady Grammy campaigning and email blitzing during the nominations process. The Recording Academy now has rules in place to prevent this kind of nomination from happening.

She’s also written A TON of songs for/with people who I assume are Academy members. I can 100% understand that getting her a nomination, but the fact that she won was just so random. Especially for an album that not only had little popularity but also only got her ONE nomination at this year’s Latin Grammys (for Best Portuguese Language Song, of all categories).

I mean, for all I know, it WAS the better album that year, in terms of quality, but the Latin Pop category rarely goes to someone who’s not a big name.
