By the way, regarding predictions for this craptastic show:

    VOTY
Future (feat. Drake) – “Life Is Good”
Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande – “Rain On Me” (predictable winner)
Dua Lipa – “Break My Heart” / “Physical”
    Roddy Ricch – “The Box”
    The Weeknd – “Blinding Lights”

    SOTY
Dua Lipa – “Don’t Start Now”
Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande – “Rain On Me”
    Post Malone – “Circles”
    Roddy Ricch – “The Box”
    The Weeknd – “Blinding Lights”

    Artist of the Year
Justin Bieber (shouldn’t be here but we know how MTV works)
    Drake
    Post Malone
    Roddy Ricch
    The Weeknd
(although we know former Music Television will put Gaga/Ariana somehow)

    Best Pop
Billie Eilish – “Everything I Wanted”
Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande – “Rain On Me”
Dua Lipa – “Break My Heart” / “Physical”
    Post Malone – “Circles”
    Harry Styles – “Adore You”
(“Blinding Lights” should be here but The Weeknd is Black, so they’ll put in R&B)

    Best Direction
    Doja Cat – “Say So”
Future (feat. Drake) – “Life Is Good”
Dua Lipa – “Break My Heart” / “Physical”
    Roddy Ricch – “The Box”
    The Weeknd – “Blinding Lights”

    Best Art Direction
all of the previous in “Direction”, just changing “Say So” for “Yummy” to their usual Bieber nomination.

    Best Cinematography
all of the previous “Direction” nominees, just changing “Life Is Good” for “Adore You”.

and that’s it, no any other relevant prediction.

This year I think we will see more VOTY nominees attending the VMAS than the last few years.

and that’s why VMA lost its credibility at least a decade ago. MTV doesn’t mean “Music Television” to begin with – added to the fact they are voting-based (unlike its peak years) and reward whoever buys their wins agrees to perform in such a decadent award show…… TCA-level.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you there. As much as I love to see the nominees and how amazing the live performances can be sometimes, I feel like MTV shifting to being another plain cable network, added with the fact that almost anyone can vote for these categories have brought the award ceremony in decline. I’ll admit, if I had a time machine, I would want to go back to when MTV was planning the 2007 VMAs, and tell the executives to not get rid of the Viewer’s Choice.

…oh, and also to try and not be like the E! network because that network is trash.

I guess nominations will be announced Tuesday July 28, and the Vanguard recipient mid August.

General categories are (even though MTV ultimately decides the winners based on deals & attendance). Technical awards are voted on by “professionals”.

July 28 is emmy’s nominations already and MTV wants to secure most hype and media attention as possible, but its probably around those days

Gaga & Roddy are definitely leading the nominations. Ariana will coattail off her numerous collaborations and come in 2nd place.

General categories are (even though MTV ultimately decides the winners based on deals & attendance). Technical awards are voted on by “professionals”.

To add to this, there’s also some difference to how fan-voting works for different categories. Voting for most categories happens on mtv.com and ends a week or two before the event; but they usually also have a few “social media” categories that are voted on exclusively via Twitter, Instagram, etc. (whoever MTV has a deal with this year), and have their own voting period.

Best New Artist is typically voted on until the night of the VMAs, and during the pre-show they reveal the top 2, with a new round of voting taking place for the winner into about the 2nd hour of the ceremony.

I wonder how dynamics will change if they go virtual this year…

The only thing to look out for is the technical categories. It could be an indication of what to expect at the Grammy’s.
