Is anyone interested in creating an awards ceremony? I mean the Grammy really suck at picking the best of music, as shown on the Billie Eilish sweep of last year. We can the people at Goldderby to put them on the website or something. At least we have something there for people to get a consensus for the music that came out this year.

    Albums of the Year:

    After Hours~The Weeknd
    Fetch the Bolt Cutters~Fiona Apple
    RTJ4~Run the Jewels
    What’s Your Pleasure~Jessie Ware
    The Slow Rush~Tame Impala
    Circles~Mac Miller
    folklore~Taylor Swift
How I Am Feeling Now~Charli XCX
    SAWAYAMA~Rina Sawayama
    The GOAT-Polo G
Women in Music Volume Part III-HAIM
    Lianne La Havas~Lianne La Havas
    YHLQMDLG~Bad Bunny
    Punisher~Phoebe Bridgers
    The Strokes~The New Abnormal
    græ~Moses Sumney
    2017-2019~A.A.L.

I feel like Artist of the Year would be redundant. Album of the Year and Record of the Year are basically that.

I personally think what does Artist of the Year qualify under? As well as what does BNA qualify under.

Keep dreaming!  The General Field does NOT need to be updated.

Also, Best New Artist should NOT be eliminated.

I’ve been thinking about it for awhile now.

Agreed. BNA is irritating and pointless to me. Should be scrapped.

the problem with this would be finding music from genres that aren’t so popular like Classical and Regional Roots and Children’s Music. But if you can checkmark that, then you’re good to go.

While Artist of the Year is a brilliant suggestion, I’m personally not one to support the recognition of the artist but rather the art.

i agree Best Production should be somewhere as opposed to POTY but it wouldn’t be in GF.

GF has ROTY which combines production, engineering and performance. So does AOTY with the exception of songwriters (which they just added).

Unless we want to further split ROTY/AOTY into Performance of the Year and Production of the Year, I’d say we leave ROTY as is but change the Producer of the Year to Production of the Year to recognize one album.

There would be no point in an Artist of the Year category. It would end up going to whoever wins AOTY.

I disagree that Artist/Performer would be redundant; BNA has gone to to an artist without the most noms. Similarly, an artist/ group does not always win >1 GF. Either eliminate BNA OR replace with 1/ both of Breakthrough Artist + Performer of the Year.

In 2020, “POTY” could’ve gone to Billie, Gaga, or Ariana Grande; Billie’s highs were higher than Gaga or Grande, but the latter 2 had a consistent year of impact. 2009 (Swift, Kings of Leon, Beyonce) and 2010 (Arcade Fire, Lady Antebellum) are recent examples where 1 act didn’t dominate.

I’d rather see reforms at the genre level come first: definitions of each genre, consistency in the awards, panels across the board. If I had to make GF tweaks at the moment, I’d reduce the fields to Top 5 popular vote + 1-3 committee picks. 8 has shown to be far too many nominees.

To be honest, I’d settle for just some consistency in the nomenclature and definitions posted online; is ROTY synonymous with Performance of the Year? If not, why are there so many Performance awards? Song, Sung Performance, Performance, Recording, Traditional, Contemporary… what do these mean and why do they only apply to some genres?

This could be fun. I don’t know why the moderators make awards for film and TV but not for music.

ROTY is not performance of the year. ROTY rewards the overall quality of the music and not focused on the performance of the artist. If it were, “Paper Planes” wouldn’t have any business there.

On genre nomenclature, I’ll go through a few that come to mind:

    1. Solo (e.g Best Improvised Jazz Solo, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Country Solo Performance): One artist’s performance is considered. There could be backing artists but their influence is normally minimal.

    2. Duo/Group (e.g Best Country Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance): These consider performances by at least two separate artists or a group. A group could be like Maroon 5 where it’s essentially one person who sings but there are known members to the group.

    3. Song (e.g Song of the Year, Best American Roots Song, Best Rap Song): These are awards for songwriters alone. To qualify, the song must be original to a great extent (not to say they don’t throw in the occasional “Anaconda” and “Stay with Me”).

    4. Traditional (e.g Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, Best Traditional Blues Album, Nest Traditional R&B Performance): Some genres have evolved over the years, however, the traditional awards are for those who make music in the older/traditional style of these genres. For example, Pop music a long time ago sounded like what some would call show tunes or standards but is now associated with a wide variety of music styles ranging from the likes of Adele to Billie Eilish to Taylor Swift. Work that is done in the classic pop style, like Tony Bennett’s music, qualifies as traditional pop.

    4. Recording (e.g Best Opera Recording, Best Dance Recording, Record of the Year): a recording is the finished product I.e. what you hear while streaming or listening after a purchase. For a recording award, the efforts of the performing artist, the producers and the engineers are considered.

    5. Performance (e.g Best Rap Performance,  Best R&B Performance): As with solo and duo/group, a performance only considers the efforts of the artist.

    6. Album (e.g Album of the Year, Best Folk Album): These reward the makers of the album but there’s a slight twist to this one. For Album of the Year, the artist, songwriters, producers and engineers for all eight albums nominated are considered. But for genre album awards, only the artists are nominated. Not sure about 2020 yet but ideally, the producers and engineers for the winning album also get the prize.

I’d change Best New Artist to “Breakthrough Artist” or “Horizon Award.” Add Pop Song, Alternative Song/Perfomance, and bring back the gendered categories. ROTY & SOTY might need to be combined at some point, since current voters can’t seem to make the distinction anymore between a song’s production quality and its writing. I’m not quite there with the latter yet.

If I were to change things:

    1. Scrap BNA and both POTY awards. New artists can compete with the mainstays. No need having an award that can’t be won twice and is a hit-or-miss. POTY should become Best Production for a specific album the way there is Best Engineered Album.

    2. Pop song.

    3. Alternative recording. For me, alternative music at its core isn’t worth a performance or song category, so, like the Dance Category, it should be given a recording category. Songs from the alternative genre that manage to bend the status quo would most definitely fit into pop or rock song.performance.

    4. Song and performance categories for World Music and Reggae. They’re distinct enough to have their own song and performance categories.

    5. Song and performance for Latin music. HOWEVER, a lot of Latin music is essentially pop in Spanish or Portuguese. As with “Despacito,” these should be left in the pop categories. But songs from genres like Tropical Latin, Salsa and genres unique to Latin music should be considered here.

    6. Merge pop solo and duo/group performance. This would be the most competitive category in the lineup.

    7. Introduce Traditional Pop Performance.

    8. Merge Country solo and duo/group performance.

    9. That mess they did with the Gospel/Christian Music category should be undone. Separate the performance from the song categories, please.

    That’s it for now.
