what a category, aretha stands heads and shoulders above the rest though. I’d actually think either chaka or teena was second. I also just found out teena has never won a grammy, would’ve given her one for it must be magic

Interesting thought. I do agree that Teena Marie definitely should have been a Grammy winner.
Chaka Khan just won the Grammy the previous year for the single I Feel For You. Chaka’s chances would have been stronger if she were nominated for the single Through The Fire. I rank her 5th
Teena Marie’s Lovergirl did get a lot of airplay on R&B stations and is her highest charting song on the pop charts. I would rank her 4th, but a strong 4th.
I think that Whitney or Patti were runner ups in this one. You Give Good Love was everywhere as well as Patti’s New Attitude.
