People need to stop predicting Coldplay. They have alphabetical order advantage, so their nomination means almost nothing. They have industry connections and get nominated almost every year, but their last Grammy win was in 2009.
To put things into perspective, that was the year before Taylor Swift’s first Grammy win.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 28, 2022 at 7:34 pm #1205169856F*ck yes! Daniel Montgomery, Journalist at large has released his article over the wire about Diana not winning a Grammy this evening. Let’s hope it’s picked up far and wide so enough voters are motivated to vote in that Traditional Pop Vocal Album category!
And maybe release an article on Bjork now? That b*tch needs help too!

November 29, 2022 at 1:10 pm #1205170793Honey, in addition to making history by winning Song of the Year three times, Adele will also make history by winning Best Pop Vocal Album three times. February 5, 2023 will be Adele’s night!
ReplyCopy URLNovember 29, 2022 at 5:07 pm #1205170998I wouldn’t be surprised if Kelly wins in TPA, they have given her 2 PVA, so maybe they might give her one there.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 29, 2022 at 11:21 pm #1205171269Honey, Kelly Clarkson is well-liked in the industry. I also would NOT be surprised if she won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 30, 2022 at 10:55 am #1205171675Bublé is such a clear frontrunner for TPVA, sorry. 4x winner of this category, Christmas albums don’t win and I’m not convinced voters will care as much about Diana Ross’s lack of grammys as goldderby does.

#26 I Like You
#66 Bam Bam
#98 Unholy
n/a My Universe (didn’t chart last year either)Almost tempted to say this disqualifies “My Universe.” This song is not known to non-BTS fans.

Do you really think so? Who would win over them? I don’t see any other names that would pique the voters’ interest. I mean, “Coldplay and BTS”, who’ve been nominated three years in a row, seems pretty appealing to me.
I could MAYBE see Unholy winning just because it may be the only song the voters have heard thanks to its virality, but that song winning a Grammy would seem like a hate crime.

ABBA’s song is nominated in Record of the Year. “Unholy” and “I Like You” are bigger hits.

This is the Grammys, not the BBMA’s for you to even think to say that this disqualifies My Universe
ReplyCopy URLDecember 2, 2022 at 7:10 pm #1205176398The Grammys are very US-centrist, we know, BUT as a person that does not live in the United States, I Like You is a non-factor, i’ve never heard of this song my entire life, i just know that it exists and they don’t tend to award songs that don’t get a lot of noise. I’m looking at the recipients right now and all of the winners are songs that crossed the bridge between countries, except for Tony/Amy, but there’s a narrative there.
I’m not even gonna mention Bam Bam. Filler nominee, bleh.
I gave my opinion on ABBA a few pages ago, but, as i said before, the Academy probably does not even remember that they haven’t awarded ABBA in all of their career, also, they could have been namechecked as they were the very first name on the list, but this is a possibility, not something that i’m completely sure of since they also got in ROTY and AOTY. Besides all of that, the last time that a song that wasn’t a hit won was in 2012, that’s 10 years ago and i’m not betting against a non-hit again after the fiasco last year.
Personally, for me, the competition is between Unholy and My Universe. Unholy for obvious reasons but i see a lot of people underestimating My Universe and denying its success. Look, i live in the biggest country of South America, My Universe was big here, enough for me to be walking down the streets on my way to work and seeing a random ass store playing it aloud. If we consider international success, MU takes the lead as the biggest hit as it also a huge hit in Europe.
I think that Unholy will take it, but i’m rooting for Coldplay and BTS because, asides for personally liking the song, they genuinely deserve this award, this does not mean that the other ones do not deserve it, but this may be BTS’ last chance at a Grammy win and they deserve one for being one of the most influential acts of the 21st century. Say what you wanna say about them or their fans, but being one of the most successful acts in America while singing in a language that’s spoken in a country that has over 50 million people (which is a population smaller than the state of California and Texas merged together) is a feat that no one will be able to top.
I could MAYBE see Unholy winning just because it may be the only song the voters have heard thanks to its virality, but that song winning a Grammy would seem like a hate crime.
I genuinely think that it would be the worst winner of all time at BPDGP in terms of music quality, the only one that i know of that could rival this title is Hey Soul Sister in 2011.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 2, 2022 at 11:22 pm #1205176490Honey, ABBA or Sam Smith/Kim Petras will win Best Pop Duo/Group Performance over Coldplay/BTS.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 3, 2022 at 4:24 pm #1205177154Sam Smith and Kim Petras have a real chance. Unlike Coldplay who have alphabetical advantage, and seem to get nominated every year, Sam is not as well known in the US music scene and hasn’t been nominated in a long time, so when they do get nominated, it means that some people really liked the song.
Not only is the song a hit, but it stands out from everything else on the charts.
I was quite surprised to see Rick Beato and Rhett Shull review the Spotify Top 10. Both Rick and Rhell are from a rock background, and “Unholy” was one of the few songs they said positive things about. The comment that stands out is “this is the only thing I’ve heard so far, that I’d be interested in hearing again”.

Before you say these people are just youtubers, Rick Beato has a degree in music and master’s degree in jazz studies. He was a college professor at Ithaca College and has been a session musician, songwriter and record producer. Rhett Shull is a touring musician.
This video goes more into the music theory.

The song is in phrygian mode. The chorus is in phrygian dominant mode. This is more like something you hear in Arabic music than Top 40 pop.
Try naming another pop song or high charting song of any genre using phrygian and/or phrygian dominant modes.
Sometimes the Grammys reward songs that sound quite different from everything else on the pop charts, I’m thinking “Somebody That I Used to Know” and “Royals”, but I’m sure these are other examples.
Perhaps if the song wasn’t released so late in the eligibility period, it might have made it into the general field. But then again, perhaps not with those lyrics.
