We have a pop and R&B thread so why not have one for rap? So far, Tyler the Creator seems to be the major competitive one since he has a good commerical debut and great reviews for IGOR. Yet, Anderson.Paak could sneak up and give him a run. He did unexpectedly win a Grammy this year so they are noticing him.

“Tints” is probably the one to beat in Rap/Sung Performance given the surprise Anderson win and Kendrick generally being a favorite.

I’m predicting Going Bad by Meek Mill and Drake to be a threat in some of these categories. It was a huge hit and the Grammys obviously like Drake.

Chance The Rapper is releasing in July and I’m expecting him to be the one to beat in Rap Album (unless Kendrick releases).

I think Tyler, the Creator’s “IGOR” would be a stellar Best Rap Album winner.

Higher by DJ Khaled, John Legend and the late Nipsey Hussle is for sure a frontrunner in Rap/Sung and Rap Song.

What’s Free by Meek Mill f/ Jay Z and Rick Ross is Best Rap Performance contender. Going Bad could be a lock for “Best Rap Song”.

“Please Me” by Cardi and Bruno is likely the commercial juggernaut/one to beat for Best Rap/Sung Performance if nominated.

For whatever it’s worth, I thought IGOR was good but I wouldn’t be surprised if it *barely* gets in AOTY. Some of the songs are very jarring on the first listen and trippy. The instrumentals are blaring, it’s almost as if he is whispering in a distorted fashion and I can see that turning some voters off.

Anderson. Paak’s album(s) will likely compete in the R&B field.

I do agree that “Tints” is a very strong contender for Best Rap/Sung Performance. So is the Nipsey/Khaled/John Legend collaboration.

21 Savage and A Boogie might make noise too. a lot by 21 and J. Cole could easily win best rap song, and Look Back At It for rap/sung collaboration. Also the UK rap scene has been pretty big, both Dave and Little Simz had exceptional albums

Anderson. Paak’s album(s) will likely compete in the R&B field.

Oxnard could go either way – rap or urban contemporary. Last year, a lot of heavily-sung hip-hop albums were assumed to be going urban contemporary, but almost of all them ended up in rap, with a few notable exceptions such as The Carters and Post Malone.

If Anderson submits to anything he’ll proabbly submit BOTH to Urban Contemporary. Or 1 to R&B Album (Oxnard) and 1 to Urban Contemporary Album (Ventura).

    None will be in Rap.
